Charles Antony “Tony” Short
1940-2020
It is with great sadness the family announces the death of
their beloved husband, father, father-in-law, brother-in-law and uncle
in the palliative care unit of the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on
Saturday, March 7th after a brief illness. Tony
was born on April 5th, 1940 in Bournemouth,
England, son of the late Dr. John and Anneliese Short.
At the age of 11 he moved to Toronto, Ontario where his
father was invited to take over as minister of St. Georges United
Church on Lytton Blvd. Tony attended Upper Canada College for most of
his high school. However, he made many close friends from his year at
Lawrence Park Collegiate and they remained close until his
death.
Tony graduated from the University of New Brunswick (UNB)
with an undergraduate and Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering
(BScME’64 and MScME’67). He was a member of a
small class who were close and supportive of each other. Over the
years, Tony helped organize class reunions every five years to
celebrate their friendship. The latest reunion was their
55th held in in September of 2019. Following
graduation with his masters, Tony worked for Federal Pacific Electric
in Toronto. In 1969, Dr. Eric Wheatly invited Tony to return to UNB to
teach mechanical engineering, first in the Mechanical Engineering
Department, and then in the newly formed Department of Forest
Engineering where he also served time as department
chair.
Tony is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Penelope
“Penny” Jane (White) Short; beloved son and daughter, Dr.
Christopher Ian Short (Katrin Jacob),
Halifax, NS and daughter, Kimberly Joanne
Short, Vancouver, BC; sister, Muriel Munro, Inverness, Scotland;
brother, Alastair, New York, NY; beloved sister-in-law, Dianne
Clairoux (Richard), St. Stephen, NB; brother-in-law, John White
(Rema), Edmonton, AB; and two nieces and a nephew. Predeceased by his
parents; brother, Norman (Rosemary); and brother-in-law, Ginger
(Muriel).
A memorial service for Tony will be held later in the spring.
Donations in Tony’s name can be made to UNB’s
“Class of 64 Eric E. Wheatley Memorial Fund in Mechanical
Engineering”, the “Canadian Cancer Society”, or the
“Stepping Stone Senior Centre”.
