It is with great sadness that we share the sudden passing of Cecil Roy Slater of Port Hawkesbury, formerly of Louisdale, on May 21, 2020. Born on October 1, 1942, he was the son of the late Cecil Austin Slater and Catherine (MacDougall) Slater.
Cecil didn’t even have to try and he would make people laugh and smile. Even though he was afflicted with MS for the last 30 years, Cecil did his best to keep moving, stay happy and enjoy life. One of his favorite past times was to go fishing with one of his best friends, Herman Samson. In 2017, Cecil’s condition required him to move to MacLeod Nursing Home in Port Hawkesbury, but in true Cecil fashion, he still enjoyed teasing and laughing with all the staff and residents of the home. His pride and joy were his family; he was a very loving and protective father. Every day , he would look at the family pictures on the wall and say, “Family is the most important thing.”
Cecil was a character his whole life. From his days of bouncing at the local dances, to being the custodian at Louisdale Elementary, Cecil loved to make adults and children alike feel good. He loved the children at the school and is remembered to this day for all the ways he made the kids smile.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Eileen (Samson) Slater; sons John Slater, Louisdale, Gary (Kim) Slater, Halifax, Bradley (Lisa) Slater, Louisbourg; step-son Blair (Cathy) Samson, Louisdale; grandsons Kristopher (Amy) Slater, Halifax, Chandler Slater (Kailey Maltby), Halifax, Randy (Erin) Samson, Dartmouth, Kyle (Haley) Samson, Arichat; great-grandson, Leo; sister Brenda MacLeod and many extended family.
The family would like to thank everyone from MacLeod Nursing Home for making the last few years of Cecil’s life as enjoyable as possible.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Green’s Funeral Home, 507 Bernard St., Port Hawkesbury. Funeral and visitation will be delayed until a later date. Donations in memory of Cecil may be made to MS Canada or charity of your choice.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Cecil Roy Slater October 01 1942 May 21 2020..
