Peacefully on May 9, 2020, at the age of 86, Carol Guttormson (nee Hunnie) passed away at the Betel Nursing Home in Selkirk, Manitoba.
She was predeceased by her husband Fred in February, 2003. Carol leaves behind her 5 children Roy (Sharlene), Doug (Connie), Arlene (Larry), Carl (Sherry) and Cheryl (Doug). Her 10 grandchildren Keith, Nikki and Alex, Lindsay, Mandy and Eric, Shannon and Tyler, Michael and Shantel have many wonderful memories of visiting Amma and Afi at the farm. Their children, Carol’s great-grandchildren Emaly, Rhianna, Royce, Ava, Arielle, Reid, Owen, Linden, Xachery, Xayden, Perrin and Lily will now come to know Lang Amma through family stories and photos.
Carol was born on August 1, 1933 in Poplar Park, Manitoba, the only child of Anna Hunnie. Mom spent much of her childhood in the care of Baba Hunnie where she learned to master the art of pyrogy making. Mom married Fred on March 20,1952. and their eldest son Roy was born a year later. They ran the A & G General Store in Libau for a few years then moved to Atikokan, Ontario where the rest of the clan was born. In 1961 they moved back to Libau and purchased the family farm where they hosted many gatherings and happy meals with friends and family. Mom worked for many years as a Home Care Worker and forged many friendships through her hard work and dedication to helping the elderly and the ill. Mom had a wonderful voice and loved to sing. Her pyrogy’s were some of the best ever made and many a visitor was treated to a generous helping. Her declining health over the last ten years or so saw her leave the family farm for an apartment in Selkirk and finally to the Betel Nursing Home.
A special Thank You to Mom’s friend and loving companion Monica Dzisiak, who spent so much time with Mom. Monica always brought a ray of sunshine and love to Mom’s world. Also a huge Thank You to all caregivers at Betel for the loving care they provided to Mom.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Alzheimer’ Society of Manitoba , 10-120 Donald St. Wpg, Mb R3C or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
Due to the situation with Covid 19, a private family gathering will be held at a later date.
