Obituary of Carmine Maglione Sr.
Carmine Domenico Maglione, age 78, formerly of Killam, Alberta, passed away at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta, on April 10, 2020.
Papa was born on February 17, 1942, in the comune (municipality) of Airola, in the Province of Benevento, in the region of Campania, Italy. He came to Canada by ship when he was seven years old with his mother, step-father, and siblings. The family travelled across Canada by train and settled in the Peace Country in Alberta, where he grew up, went to school, and helped on the family farm. He joined the army in the early 1960s and was a proud member of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. After the army, Papa began his career with Alberta Recreation & Parks and was posted in many communities in northern and central Alberta. He was very honoured to be a Provincial Park Ranger and was able to mentor and train many young rangers who became lifelong friends. After retiring from Parks, Papa went into business and bought a tire shop in central Alberta. Finally, he was ready to retire and lived in Edmonton, Ashmont, Elk Point, and Killam, where he lived in the Manitou Lodge until his passing.
Papa loved music – he was an avid harmonica player and had a ‘playlist’ that demonstrated an amazing range of songs that he could play. He also loved playing crib, watching television, going to garage sales, eating spits, and riding around on his scooter. Papa was curious about people and the world. He loved to talk politics, send political texts, cartoons, and jokes to his friends and family, and generally just stir the pot, sit back, and see what happened. He was also an awesome cook – his pasta sauce, tubettini and meatballs were amazing and a favorite among his kids and grandkids.
Most of all, and best of all, Papa was a strong, kind, fair, forgiving, generous, funny, and loving man. For Papa, his family was everything. He was also the ‘rock’ for all his brothers and sisters. He will be missed dearly by all his family and the many, many, friends that he made throughout his lifetime.
Papa is preceded in death by his beloved mother, Cira Perrotta, step-father, Aniello Perrotta, Sr., brother Sam, brother John, brother-in-law Domenico, sister-in-law Genevieve, brother-in-law Fernand, brother-in-law Gordon, and nieces and nephews.
Papa is survived by his wife Sophie; daughter Sher, son-in-law, Rob; son, Carmine Maglione, Jr. (Sonny); step-sons Glenn and Charles; sister-in-law Mary; five grandchildren: Michael, Brandy, Darby, Sara, and Cache; five great-grandchildren; brothers: Frank, Andrew, Tony, Aniello, Jr., their spouses; sisters: Sabina, Rose, Maria, Annie, Alina, their spouses, and many nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. In memory of Papa, donations made to Diabetes Canada would be appreciated.
