INGRAM, Robert George: October 16, 1924 – Alameda, SK to December 7, 2010 – Calgary, AB
Long-time residents of Alameda will remember Evelyn & Bob Ingram who lived & worked in Alameda for most of their life.
Evelyn was born to loving and hard-working parents, William Judson Caughey and Genevieve May Hall on Sept. 17, 1922, on a farm near Craven, Sask. She described her first memory as, “standing in the front yard of my home on the slopes of the Qu’Appelle Valley and looking over the valley in the springtime watching the hundreds of pelicans floating on the blue water.” Significantly younger than her two older sisters, Irene and Elaine, Evelyn recalled many of her younger years as being lonely and it was then that she discovered her love of reading. Having grown up on a farm in the dirty 30s and having memories of paperboys screaming “Extra! Extra! War!” Evelyn represents one of our most iconic generations. She approached life with practicality, strength and humbleness coupled with a deep love and commitment to her family and friends. This was demonstrated by her passion for gardening, participation in the church, culinary and baking skills, deftness with finances and most importantly, a deep devotion to her family. She was always the consummate lady who took pride in never having a hair out of place and having an eye for manners. Evelyn spent most of her life living in Alameda, Sask., which is where she brought up her beloved daughter, Sandra Lynne Ann and met and married the love of her life, Robert Ingram. She was a hard worker who took on many different jobs including waitressing in her parent’s café, working in the Slack’s general store and volunteering in the local library, however; Evelyn always saw her most important role as being there for her family. In 1997, Evelyn and Bob moved to Calgary to be closer to her daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Robert was the youngest son of seven children and started life in Alameda, Saskatchewan where he was born and resided for the most of his life. In 1934 during the depression, Bob`s family moved north to Kelvington, Saskatchewan to escape the drought where he went to school & worked on various farms until he returned to Alameda in 1942. During this time, Bob helped with dray work which involved a horse & cutter in the winter, worked for a local farmer, worked for a machine dealer assembling & operating machinery and for extra money started driving a school bus. In 1957 Bob took over the dray business until he started work for the Town of Alameda in 1964. On February 2, 1962, Bob married Evelyn, the love of his live. Bob was a “Jack of All Trades” and enjoyed operating any piece of machine that came his way. The Town of Alameda was truly a special place for Bob and he continued working for the town until his retirement in 1985. Bob retired from the school unit in the same year after 31 years driving his bus route. Although Bob moved with his wife Evelyn to Calgary in 1997 to be closer to family, he never lost his love for the prairies.
Interment Service
Evelyn & Bob will be laid to rest together at the Alameda Cemetery on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at 11:00 am. A public graveyard interment service will be held at that time with Sandy Dalziel officiating. Friends are invited to bring lawn chairs & join the family at the Alameda Cemetery for the service.
