Obituary
Betty Sykes
An inspiration to us all.
Born January 6, 1932. Huddersfield, England.
Died June 29, 2020. Smithers, British Columbia.
“To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die”. Thomas Campbell
Betty is survived by her brothers Ken, Alan (Jean) and numerous nephews and nieces in England and New Zealand. She is predeceased by her parents Hilda and Thomas, her sister Muriel, and sister in law Margaret.
Betty completed her nursing qualifications in England in 1955. In 1963 she travelled by ship and train with her friend, Marlene, to Swift Current, Sask. From there, she continued her career in Alert Bay, NWT, then Clearwater, arriving in Smithers in 1981. She worked at the Bulkley Valley District Hospital until her retirement in 1987.
Betty was no stranger to adventures, enjoying a wide range of pursuits (skiing, skating, camping, fishing). In retirement, Betty continued to garden and travel and took up painting and volunteering. She also enjoyed line dancing, aquasize and seniors’ trips.
Betty found great joy in gardening, being outdoors, keeping active, baking, her home and the Bulkley Valley.
Due to current circumstances, it is not possible to have a service. We hope friends and family will remember Betty in their own way.
