RANKIN, Alvin Louis “Smiley, Alzie” Passed away peacefully at Campbellford Memorial Hospital on January 18, 2020 after a 20 year cage match with Kidney Disease. Beloved husband to Joan (nee Twiddy). Predeceased by mother Marie Sommerville (Van Slyke) of Stirling. Youngest of 3 children, brother to Elmer and Ruby. Born April 5, 1938. Al was a loving father to his 5 children Bob (Linda), Lori Ann (Glen), Rodney (Melody), Eric and Christopher (Kelly). Proud grandfather to Adam, Matt, Sarah, Shawnie Rankin, and Amanda, Brittney Downey. Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Originally from Belleville, Al decided to move to Stirling when a local farm girl caught his eye. Known only as “Smiley”, Al asked Joan for a dance. They were married on and have been tag team partners since July 4, 1959. Al and Joan have been outstanding and dedicated Canada Post Rural Mail-Men, serving the Stirling area for nearly 50 years, never missing a day because of weather or taking sick days until absolutely needed. In Al’s younger days he also worked for General Motors, Stirling Creamery, Henry Street Arena and learned the Construction Trade from Claude Trumble. Al was also the proud owner of the old Stirling Pool Room on Mill Street where many local legends and stories originated. (Late 1960’s – Early 1970’s).
Thanks to Teresa and the entire homecare team, “Super” Mike Gorman and the CMH Staff, Dr. Webb, Dr. Weinstein, The Heart of Hastings Hospice, and the Stirling Funeral Chapel. Everyone is welcome to stop at the parlour and talk with Joanie and Eric about the good times, old times or how Alzie got you on a technicality. Lots of laughs and keep on smiling!!!
