Alice (Gaudet) Brun
1920 – 2020
Alice (Gaudet) Brun, who earned the title of centenarian earlier this year, achieved what many of us only dream of – living through volumes of history. In her vast lifetime, she witnessed many technological advancements and their impact on our daily lives. On Monday, November 16th, 2020 Alice passed away after having lived for 100 years, 7 months and 13 days. She bridged the span of time from one pandemic to another by being named in memory of her 15-year-old cousin Alice who died Oct 26, 1918 from the Spanish Flu. Our mother will be remembered for her endearing smile, her warm disposition, and her sharp memory.
Born on April 3, 1920, Alice was raised on a farm in St. Joseph, New Brunswick where her parents worked tirelessly and kept them from starving during the hard times between World Wars and the Great Depression. She was the daughter of Philias Gaudet (1875-1964) and Minnie Richard (1879-1951). Alice had become the sole survivor of her family, losing her closest brother, Antonio Gaudet, in 2013. Her other siblings included Albenie, Charles, Albert, Edouard, Camille, and Bernadette. In 1988, after 45 years of marriage, Alice became widowed when her husband, Alderic Brun passed away unexpectedly at the age of 67. In 2017, Alice also was predeceased by her beloved 24-year old grandson, Erik Brun.
Alice will be remembered by her four loving sons, Paul (Dorice), Georges, Louis (Denise Maillet), Guy (Tina Smith) and her granddaughters, Lisa Brun, and Cindy Brun (as well as her mom, Lily Allain). She will also be lovingly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews and by her godchildren, Gerard, Lucille, Georges (deceased), Phyllis, Francoise, Francis (deceased), and Roger.
A dedicated journal keeper and devote Catholic, Alice recorded most of her life in diaries which she began on January 6, 1937 when Brother Andre (Saint) died. She was a true homemaker and a fabulous baker which is probably the reason behind all her sons having such a sweet tooth. Her other passions were reading and crossword puzzles. She also took pride in never forgetting birthdays and special events and sending cards or calling those close to her.
Due to restrictions imposed by COVID-19, her 100th birthday was not celebrated with the party her family had planned, but she happily spent her special day waving to everyone through her picture window. She was showered with gifts and messages of love from family, friends, and neighbors.
Alice was truly blessed as she lived in her two-story Moncton family residence all her adult years. Noted for her good physical condition, she was a fit and strong woman who amazed her family with her ability to climb stairs up until the final month prior to her hospitalization.
Alice’s family would like to express special thanks to the staff at Dr. Georges -L.-Dumont Hospital Palliative Care unit 3C who always remarked: “She always smiles and never complains”. Thanks also to Dr. Paulette Leblanc, Dr. Vicky Taylor and Dr. Giberson. Many thanks to her granddaughter Cindy who spent many hours keeping her company at home and at the hospital, to her goddaughter Francoise LeBlanc and her special niece Alice Gould who watched over her when the family needed help, and to all her extended family, relatives, and friends who took the time to stay in touch and to visit with her.
A celebration of Alice’s life will take place at a later date.
Expressions of condolences and donations may be made in Alice’s memory to Centre Marie-Léonie Paradis (Sherbrooke).
