Alan (Al), at the age of 88, passed away peacefully at the Cowichan District
Hospital. Al was born in Victoria BC, to a Victoria resident who later became a
Cowichan Valley man, Arthur, his father, and to a fine lady from England – Amy
his mother. Al with his family later moved to the lower mainland and he
grew up in Haney BC. At 18 years of age Al moved away to Regina to begin his
career as an RCMP officer. After training in Regina, he was stationed in Manitoba
and spent the rest of his distinguished career in rural towns, both in Northern
and Southern Manitoba. It was in Manitoba that Al met his beloved wife
Joan (pre-deceased) and enjoyed 62 years of marriage to this other fine lady
in his life. After 25 years in the RCMP and a shortstint in Public Service, Al eventually
moved back to his cherished British Columbia settling in Duncan in 1987
where he continued his career in Public Service for the Government of Canada.
Al quickly barrelled into a new life on the west coast gaining many new friends at
the Cowichan Golf Course, and in the many hockey rinks and curling rinks in
the Cowichan Valley. He was also known for his prowess at the poker
table, which we know many friends in the area would agree.
Al was great father and husband and he lived his life with great integrity,
honesty and caring for is fellow man. He was famously known to have given
blood to an injured man lying next to him in a remote hospital. That is an example of the many legendary things Al would do because he cared about doing
the right thing. Al was blessed with four children, Greg,
Alison, Doug and Scott, six grand children, and three great grand children.
In addition, Al is also survived by hisbrother Derek (Grace) of Ladysmith and
his sister Beryl of Vancouver and 2 nieces – Genine and Barb and their
families.
Special thanks go out to the Cowichan District Hospital third floor staff for
looking after Al so caringly and also to his Doctors and particularly Dr. Roy
Gilbert for keeping him comfortable during his last days.
Please, no flowers, but in lieu, donations can be made in Al’s name to
the Cowichan Valley Hospice Society. A worthy cause that was near and dear to
his dear wife Joan’s heart. cowichanhospice.org
A Celebration of Life will be held in Al’s honour at a later date given the current
times right now
