Passed away on Dec.3, 2019 at Georgian Bay General Hospital, Midland. On at the age of 91, after a lengthy battle with prostrate cancer.
Vern is survived by his wife Mary Goodhand, his children Andrew “Andy” of Toronto, Elaine (Albert Maggio) of Beeton,ON., stepdaughters Marni Goodhand (Chris Zarafonitis) of Niagara Falls, and Robyn (Charles Maurice) of Penetanguishene. Grandfather of Petra, Yara, Hanah & Elena Wrzesnewskyj, Toni & Daniel Maggio, Jayde & Jonathan Zarafonitis and Shane Maurice.
Vern was born on February 26,1928 in Cereal, Alberta and was raised in Vancouver, B.C. where he attended Kitsilano High School and enlisted with the RCAF 04 Feb.1951 until retirement on April 9, 1978.
While in the Air force, Vern served with Squadrons 2(M) OUT, 440Sqn, 414Sqn, 3001 T,T,U. 3CFTSA, 1CFTSD while stationed at T.T.U. Camp Borden, ON., Greenwood, N.S.,Summerside, PEI, North Bay, ON., Uplands ON.,St Hubert, PQ, Valdor, PQ 3(F) Wing, Zweibrucken, Germany, Sardina, Italy and Downsview, ON.
Vern flew and maintained Aircraft such as the Lancaster MK 11, Beechcraft Model 18, CF 100 Canuck Mk 4B & Mk 5, Vampirem Caribou, T-33 Silver Star and CF101 Voodoo Supersonic Jet.
After “Mugging Out” at the RCAF Downsview Officer’s Mess, Vern worked as Quality & Reliability Engineer for Nife-Powertronic, Hawker Siddley, Picker X-Ray, Amdhal Communications, Northern Telecom, and his own Consulting Company-CQR Inc. and retired at age 80
Vern was active in the Community as a Commissionaire for the Huronia Airport, 3rd Vice President, Royal Canadian Legion Branch #68, Penetanguishine, Board of Directors Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre, Senior Probus Club and was very active in all sports during his Air force career with his favorite hobbies being fishing, for Chinook Salmon on Georgian Bay, and line dancing at Askennonia.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2019 at the Midland Royal Canadian Legion branch 80, 196 Queen Street, Midland.
Family will receive guests at 1:00 p.m. Service will begin at 2:00 p.m. with reception to follow.
