It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Scott James MacDonald on December 4, 2019 after a courageous battle with Multiple System Atrophy. Scott was a quiet and gentle soul who will be deeply missed by his wife Alexandra and sons Ethan and Liam. Much loved son of Dan and Jan MacDonald and brother Dean (Jackie). Scott is fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews Ben, Sam, Lauren, Jack, Alex and Marianna as well as his brothers’ in law Robert (Kara), Bill (Vasso) and in-laws Bob and Sagrario Fraser. Cherished nephew and cousin of many aunts and uncles in the Ribbink and MacDonald families. Scott was a loyal friend and neighbour to those in need and will be remembered for his kind ways, always putting others before himself. Scott fought the good fight seeking alternative treatments for his illness. Never one to give up, he was accompanied to Mexico by his brother Dean to embark on stem cell treatment which was successful for a short time. Long enough to play and win a game of Operation with his two sons Ethan and Liam and to enjoy quality family time.
An accomplished varsity athlete and scholar, Scott attended University of New Brunswick (UNB) and Dalhousie University on Hockey Scholarships. He graduated from UNB with a Business Degree and went on to complete an MBA at Dalhousie graduating in 1994. He was the recipient of several awards, including the Steve Godfrey Trophy for leadership and gentlemanly conduct throughout the season, an MVP Award and Top Student Athlete Award. Scott was happiest spending time at home with his family, hitting the links with his friends and playing his beloved Thursday night hockey, which he played as long as he could.
We would like to express deep gratitude and appreciation to the staff at Sunnyside for looking after Scott and to his longtime high school and university friends who visited him often and kept his spirits up. Thank you. Finally, in the words of Dr. Seuss: “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” We are all that much better for having known Scott. He will continue to live on as a wonderful and loving person in our hearts.
