Dr. Susan Patrice Lollis
October 5, 1950 – December 20, 2019
It is with great sadness in our hearts that we announce the passing of Susan Lollis, 69, on Friday, December 20th. She passed away peacefully in her home in Guelph, as she wanted. She will be deeply missed by her children Lauren (Rory), Adrian (Amanda), her grandchildren Janelle, Harlow and Alec as well as her two brothers Dennis (Bonnie) and Greg (Yuki).
She was born to the late Virgil and Ethel Lollis in Loma Linda, California. Susan first attended UC Santa Barbara then UC Davis to complete her undergraduate degree and Masters. She moved to Guelph, from Yucaipa, California, at the age of 24 to teach in the University of Guelph Lab School; then pursued her Ph.D in psychology at the University of Waterloo. Susan joined the faculty in the Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition at the University of Guelph, and rose to the rank of Professor. Her profession was very important to her and she was highly regarded in her field. Among her numerous professional accomplishments and achievements, she received recognition for excellence in teaching, she was a highly published author, a mentor to many students and a well-respected clinician, supervisor and administrator.
Even after Susan fell ill she continued to be very passionate about and dedicated to the field of Child Psychology. A lover of music and dance, Susan always had a song in her heart. She completed her Yoga Teacher Training in 2013. She enjoyed spending time sharing meals with family and friends, and visiting with family in the United States.
After being treated for a brain tumour in early 2013, and a relapse in October of 2014, Susan exceeded all doctors’ expectations of recovery to the point of being able to return to living in her home independently and living many more years there, always pushing ahead with her recovery. Family was extremely important to Susan. She was overjoyed that she was able to meet her grandchildren and also see her son get married in 2018. It was very important to her to be surrounded by her loved ones on special occasions and holidays. One particularly meaningful day for her every year was December 21st, the Winter Solstice which brings the return of the light and longer days. A small Solstice event was held in her memory this year the day after she passed, as she would have wanted.
Susan will be remembered for her inner light that shone ever brightly, a fire that could not be extinguished. She courageously stood up for what she believed in and was well loved by so many. She had a very special place in her heart for her grandkids, and loved having visits with them to have lunch, play with playdough, dance with them or cuddle with them.
Special appreciation is given to Kirsteen Birkett and the staff at Qualicare Family HomeCare for the compassion and care they gave to Susan the past 6 years to support her in living independently in her home.
As she wished, cremation has taken place and a true celebration of life is being planned and will take place in the Spring of 2020 to allow everyone who has known Susan to come together and remember her.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Dr Susan Patrice Lollis Friday December 20th 2019..
