Dorothy Anna Jane Matthews
1931-2019
Dorothy Anna Jane Matthews (DeLoughry), age 88 of Truro,
passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 30, 2019.
Dorothy was born December 3, 1931 in Sydney, Nova Scotia to the late
John and Jessie (MacTavish) DeLoughry. Dorothy graduated from Mount
Allison University in 1953 with a Bachelors of Home Economics. She was
a dedicated teacher having taught in St. Agathe, Quebec, Bridgewater,
Yarmouth and Truro, Nova Scotia. In her later years, she worked
part-time as a bookkeeper, as well as tested and reviewed products for
a local consumer group. She was a member of both the Kinette and
K-ette (Kinsmen). Dorothy passed on the legacy of crafting to both her
daughter and granddaughters. There isn’t a craft that
Dorothy tried that she did not master. She loved to share her
creations with friends and family resulting in many Christmas trees
being adorned with her crocheted and tatted snowflakes, angels and
bells. Although her main hobby was crafting, she had many passions.
Her love for music showed through when she played violin, especially
playing with her sister-in-law and brother-in-law (Mary and Horace
Crowe) anytime they got together. She loved spending time at the
cottage in Bayhead. There she enjoyed the sounds of loons and the
beautiful sunsets. Many days were spent playing crib and scrabble. She
was an avid bridge player and easily transitioned to playing bridge
online in her later years.
Dorothy leaves her husband, Arthur; daughter Brenda (Bruce)
Harvey, Valley; grandchildren, Amanda (Rob) Reid, Drayton Valley, AB,
Alex (Sheena Teed) Harvey, Fredericton, NB; Stephanie (Taylor)
MacArthur, Truro, NS; great-grandson, Nicolas MacArthur; son, David
(Meaghan) Raymond, Smith’s Cove; sister Marguerite
Beeswanger, Barrie, ON; and many nieces and nephews.
