Calvert, Gerald “Bruce”

Peacefully surrounded by the love of his family, Gerald “Bruce” Calvert, 83, of Meaford, Ontario, passed away on December 21, 2019 at the Meaford Long Term Care Facility.
Bruce was born in Midland, Ontario to Joseph Calvert and Edith (Watts) Calvert on August 17, 1936. He went to elementary school in Port McNicoll, secondary school in Midland, and post-secondary education at Queen’s University. He married Ruth Eva (Moreau) on April 4, 1959 in Port McNicoll. Bruce worked as an educator for 35 years with the Toronto District, Grey County, and Edmonton Public School Boards. He was actively involved in the Bruce Trail, the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority, and the Meaford United Church choir. Some of his favourite pastimes were listening to classical and jazz music, and occasionally playing the piano. Bruce was a skilled athlete in a variety of sports such as hockey, fastball, curling, triathlons, and Nordic skiing. His enjoyment of working with youth included running sports camps in Toronto, and coaching ball and hockey teams. Both he and Ruth enjoyed many years of camping, canoeing, hiking, and cross-country skiing at many venues in Ontario and around the world. Bruce was a member of the Midland Red Wing Provincial Junior C champions in 53/54. He spearheaded the Bruce Calvert Earth Day Hike beginning in 2008, to raise money for the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority and local schools.
Bruce is preceded in death by parents Joseph and Edith, and siblings Joseph “Albert” (Jean), Mary (Stan), Nancy, and Billy.
He is survived by his beloved wife Ruth of 60 years. He will be remembered as a cherished dad to his children Mark (Brenda), Wendy (Jim), and Jill (Bill). Loving Papa to grandchildren Brandon (Donna), Taylor, Jaden, Aaron “Lee” (Amy), Adriane, Riali, Madison, and Noah, and great-grandchildren Andy and Adrian.
Bruce will be remembered by sisters-in-law Jean (Belcher) and Karen (Moreau) Graham, and his cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Cremation has taken place and family will receive friends at the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford on Thursday December 26 from 6 until 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at Meaford United Church at 11:00 a.m. on Friday December 27 with the Reverend SallyAnn Longfellow officiating with a reception to follow.
