It is with great sadness that the family of Winston Claude Hunt, 67, of First South, announce his passing on Sunday, July 28, 2019 at the South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater.
Born in Jersey Harbour, NL on October 29, 1951. He was the son of the late Edgar and Pearl (Stoodley) Hunt.
In his early years Winston and his four brothers were known as “the Hunt boys”, causing mischief and shenanigans to their harbour community. He began working in the Harbour Breton fish plant before starting a career at sea. It was in 1970 where he met Ellen, the love of his life. This is where their “Never Ending Song of Love” began. In 1973 the couple was married and blessed their first child Melvena in 1975.
Looking for a better future for their family, Winston, Ellen and Melvena set sail for Nova Scotia. It was here that Winston began his career with Fishery Products International, in Riverport Nova Scotia. He sailed for many captains, most notably Kevin Garland on the Triano. Ellen and Winston very quickly adjusted to their new life and gathered many friends who supported each other and became their extended family. Life was made easier with friends Marlene and Gerald Lambert and Anna and Kevin Garland. Having his brothers Raymond, Wally, Roger and their wives by their side also made Nova Scotia more like home. In 1978 they were blessed with their second child, Mark. While at sea Winston’s heart longed for home, to be with his loving wife and beautiful children. Time at home was short but filled with quality moments. Family was always first.
To better his family life Winston had a brief stint with Secunda Marine and then eventually returned to scallop fishing for his employment. After a long career at sea, Winston wanted to remain home to be present for family life. He enrolled in NSCC in 2002 and graduated with honours from the Diesel Repair Industrial and Marine Program, despite balancing school life and never leaving his sick wife’s side. Winston finished his career enjoying the staff and students at various schools in Lunenburg County. This career change brought him to land and allowed him time to spend precious time with his grandchildren, Ethan, Aidan, AJ and Martha, truly the light of his life.
Winston was passionate about giving back to the community and was always seen at the rink, involved with an “Ellen event” and even dressed like Old Saint Nick for various children’s and seniors’ events. He was involved with the Navy League of Canada, the IOOF Confidence Lodge #106, the Pinehurst Rebekah Lodge #95 and Crouse Encampment #51. He also was an active member of Native Council Zone 5, serving as a community member of Saint Norbert’s Roman Catholic Church, and actively involved with Newfie Days and the Mi’kmaq/Acadian Festival.
Sadly in 2009, Winston started to become ill. Despite a difficult diagnosis Winston persevered and took the challenge head on. Family life and events with the grandchildren were not to be missed! The diagnosis of PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) brought many changes and challenges to his life and family, eventually leading him to become a resident of Mahone Nursing Home. Life became more difficult, but Winston was eager and determined with the support of family and friends to participate in all family-oriented gatherings. Through all of this he managed to attend the hockey, soccer and school events of his grandchildren and proudly sporting his “Poppy Smile”.
Winston is survived by his wife, Ellen (Walsh), First South; daughter, Melvena (Laurel) MacIsaac, Halifax County; son, Mark (Stephanie) Centre; brothers, Raymond (Esther), Rose Bay, Edgar (Madeline), Twillingate, NL; sisters-in- law, Sadie Hunt, Glenwood, NL; Christine Hunt, Chezzecook; grandchildren, Ethan, Aidan, Martha and AJ, Mother in law, Beatrice Walsh, Grand Falls-Windsor; NL, sister in laws, Betty Jackman (Baxter), St. Joseph’s Cove, NL, Loretta MacKay (Ross), Riverview, NB; brother-in-law, Joe (Sheila) Walsh, Botwood, NL; several nieces and nephews and extended family, Marlene and Gerald Lambert, Joanne Keddy and Anna and Kevin Garland.
He was predeceased by his parents Edgar and Pearl and brothers Wally and Roger and father-in-law Benjamin.
Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Highway #3, Lunenburg with visitation on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Catholic Burial will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Norbert’s Roman Catholic Church, Lunenburg, Rev. Father Jim O’Connor officiating. Interment at Shepherd’s Hill Cemetery, Riverport. Reception is to follow interment at the Riverport Community Centre.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to CURE PSP and Mahone Nursing Home, Transportation Fund.
