Mary Rae

Mary Nanette Rae entered into rest peacefully on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at Extendicare Lindsay in her 90th year. Mary, born and raised in Toronto’s east end, worked in advertising as a media director, later ending her career with the V.O.N. Mary moved to Lindsay’s Adelaide Place Retirement Home in April 2011 and later to Extendicare in August 2016. She participated in outings, shopping trips, games and crafts. Mary often mentioned how fortunate she was to have such considerate dining room tablemates, to have so many friends and to have been cared for so well by the staff in Extendicare. Special thanks go out to Dr. Anderson for his attention to her comforts, to the excellent nursing staff, PSWs, volunteers, service and maintenance workers. Thanks also are extended to Executive CEO Nancy Rooney, and to Peggy McQuaid, Director of Nursing, who take great pride in this very well-run nursing home. An avid reader and music-lover, Mary was particular about manners and often cautioned others to mind their “please and thank yous”. She was known for teasing with sayings such as “just like downtown”. Mary will be missed by many friends, especially her long-time friend, Shirley Finnie. Mary and Shirley were schoolmates, companions at ballet performances and often travelled together. She will also be missed by her good friend, Grace Popovic who brightened Mary’s last days with many visiting hours. Mary leaves behind her family; Jim and Karen in British Columbia, Darlene and Rick in Lindsay. At Mary’s request there will not be a funeral service. Mary will be cremated and her ashes buried beside her mother in Highland Memory Gardens, Willowdale.
