Mary Jessie Beaton
December 24, 1920 – September 24, 2019
Memorial Donation
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our mom, Mary Jessie Beaton,
age 98, of St. Ninian, Nova Scotia, on September 24, 2019 at Inverness Consolidated Memorial
Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Born on December 24, 1920 at River Center, she
was the daughter of the late Malcolm and Flora (MacIsaac) Campbell. She was the last
surviving member of her family.
As the youngest of 9 siblings, Mom lost her own mother at the tender age of 16 months. At an
early age she learned the meaning of family, love, compassion, faith, strength and resilience.
Throughout her life she carried these values and instilled these qualities in her children and
grandchildren. She had incredible faith, and in her later years when she could no longer attend
mass, she never missed Mass for Shut Ins. Throughout the years, if you had the opportunity to
visit with Mom, she wouldn’t let you leave without a good cup of tea, some homemade bread
and a plate of sweets. She also had a knack for making her visitors feel as though they were
part of her own family. One of the biggest enjoyments in her life were her card games, and if a
game was not happening, she would be busy on the phone organizing one to be played at her
house. Her card playing friends, both young and old, came from all the surrounding
communities to St. Ninian, as they enjoyed her company as much as she enjoyed theirs.
Mom celebrated life and thoroughly enjoyed entertaining in her home (the more the merrier) as
she loved listening to their stories as well as sharing some of her own. She especially loved
guitar music and her happy place was in a room full of family and a good sing-along while
tapping her toes. As the family historian she had a wonderful memory, especially for dates and
relationships. When she wasn’t busy entertaining or socializing, she could be found reading,
knitting, watching Jeopardy, the Blue Jays or making puzzles all of which kept her mind sharp.
On more than one occasion she dressed up for Halloween and joined in on the local parades.
Mom, also known as Gramma and GG to her grandchildren and great grandchildren loved
giving affection as well as receiving it. No family member ever left a visit without a big hug, a
kiss, and “I love you”.
She is survived by her children, Florence, Judique, Danena, St Ninian, Gerard (Claire), Mabou,
Theresa (Arthur) Mabou, Colin (Joan), Boston, Virginia (Gordie) Judique, Lauchie (Liz) Troy,
Charlie (Diane) Port Hood and Jackie Campbell (Thunder Bay) whom she loved and raised as
her own. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Brennan (Sandra), Meghan, Andrew
(Lindsay), John, Ryan (Amey), Kyle (Krista), Erin (Trevor), Krissy (Jeremy), David (Danette),
Patricia (Cohen) and Stacy (Kevin), and by 14 great grandchildren, Denver, Ally, Jack, Jessie,
Paige, Charli, Nolan, Emerson, Ivy, Eamonn, Levi, Olan, Peyton, and Quinn. She is also
survived by sister in laws Theresa MacDonell, Judique Intervale, Kaye Brady, Dartmouth,
Elizabeth Beaton, Mabou and Emma Beaton, Halifax and many nieces and nephews. She was
predeceased by her husband Alexander, her sons Malcolm (Sandy), Donald Angus and Joseph,
Brothers Dan (Jean), John Hector (Bessie), John Angus (Christie), Roddie (Mary Ann), Collie
and sisters Catherine Cannon (Ernest), Margaret MacDonald (John Alex) and a sister in infancy.
