Peacefully at the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice on September 6th, 2019. Beloved husband of Mary Louise Arscott (nee Macaulay) for over 52 years. Cherished father of Genevieve Jones (David) and Robert Arscott (Camille). Dear brother of Bill (Margaret) of Toronto, Chris (Susan) of London, Ontario, and Diane Wait (late Nigel) of (UK). Much loved grandfather of Keira and Juliette (Arscott) and Alexander (Jones). Survived by sisters-in-law Elizabeth Macaulay, Jean Kot (late Bill), Linda Ervin (Randy) and brother-in-law Tom (Carol). Pre-deceased by sister-in-law Susan Belanger (late John). Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews: Doug Arscott (Cheryl), Stephen Arscott (Diane Jones), John Arscott (Kate), Claire Arscott (Matt) and Lisa Deeprose (Mark), Kim Ridgley (Rob), Christine Hannaford (Scott), Chris Payette, Leslie Payette, Scott Ervin, Alice Ervin (predeceased), and Jennifer Ammann-Macaulay (Hans-Rudi). Sorely missed by many great-nephews and great-nieces and new great-great nephew (James Arscott) and godchildren Cara Hannaford and Jennifer Ammann-Macaulay.
John was born in Toronto on October 29, 1932. Pre-deceased by parents Jack Arscott (Violet) and Genevieve Sackfield (Bill). He was an OPP officer for several years, and met the love of his life at a YMCA dance in 1966 while he was posted in Ottawa. They were married on June 24, 1967 in Ottawa, and subsequently lived in Blind River, before John accepted a position with the Listowel, Ontario municipal police force. They moved back to the Ottawa area in 1976, living first in Perth and then Carleton Place before retiring to Ottawa in 2006.
John was a well-known Ottawa artist, and an expert bridge player, and had a passion for cribbage and other card games. He was also an avid fan of the Montreal Canadiens. He taught bridge at the Good Companions Seniors Centre, and at Ambleside 1. He and Mary also travelled extensively, often with Bill and Margaret, to the Dominican Republic, and to Ireland to celebrate Bill and Margaret’s 50th wedding anniversary. They also delighted in going to South Korea to visit their son Rob while he was teaching there in the late 90s.
John was also an aficionado of Tai Chi, and loved to go for long walks along the Ottawa River. He loved to read, and loved to watch Netflix and TCM over the past few years. His favourite activity, though, was spending lots of time with his beloved children and grandchildren.
Many thanks to the wonderful friends at Ambleside 1 and in Carleton Place – you are the best! – and to the caring and compassionate doctors and nurses at the Queensway Carleton Hospital (ACE Unit 3rd floor). Special thanks to all the doctors, nurses, personal support workers, cleaners, and volunteers at the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice. You are all wonderful!
Friends are invited to visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue (at Richmond Road) on Tuesday, September 10th 2019 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM, with service in the chapel on Wednesday, September 11th, 2019 at 12 noon. Reception to follow.
John lived a long and happy life, thanks especially to his beloved family. He will be missed by all.
