Irene’s Obituary
Goldie, (MacPhee) Mary “Irene” ~ aged 96 of Greenwood, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 23rd, 2019. Born in Bridgeport, Cape Breton, she was the eldest daughter of the late Donald John and Mary (Walsh) MacPhee. Irene was very proud of her family and will be remembered as a devoted sister, mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. She held faith and family close to her heart. Irene spent her last years living in Greenwood with son, Brian, and daughter-in-law, Margie. During those years she was an active participant in the VON Adult Day Care Program in Berwick – more affectionately known to Irene and her family as “Granny U”. Irene never refused a cookie nor Brian’s offer to go for a drive. Irene attended Queen of Heaven Chapel in Greenwood and was a member of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada. Besides her parents, Irene was predeceased by Thomas James Goldie, her husband of 60 years, son Peter, infant daughter Ann Irene, brothers – Urban, Terrence, Blair and sister Eunice Totter. Irene is survived by sons Brian (Margie) Greenwood; John, Dartmouth; Donald, Halifax; Harvey (Brenda Riley) Antigonish and daughters Mary Flemming (Larrie Davis) Innisfail, AB; Peggy Smith (Grant Bergman), Halifax; Teresa Goldie (Phil Rivers), Edmonton, AB. Irene is also survived by sisters Zita MacNeil, Sydney and Millie (Lorne) MacNeil, Moosejaw, SK. Irene was blessed with 13 grandchildren: Laura Holland, Thomas Goldie, Brenda Goldie, Matthew Flemming, Katie Hillman, Michael Smith, Margaret Smith, Laura Maskell, Alex Goldie, Peter Goldie, James Goldie, David Goldie, Christian Norgaard – as well as 13 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Clive Holland, grandson-in-law, who Nana considered her personal “Mr. Fix-it” – particularly when it came to her rosary beads. The family also wish to thank the VON, Palliative Care and the staff of “Granny U” for the excellent care and compassion received. Funeral Mass will be held 11 am Saturday, September 28th at Queen of Heaven Chapel, Greenwood with Padre George Helou officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment to follow Saturday, October 5, 2019, at St. Ninian’s cemetery, Antigonish – Father Donald MacGillvray officiating. We have been so blessed to have had her in our lives.
