ZWOZDESKY, Anna
Anna Zwozdesky (née Hryhor) passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 97. Born in 1922, on the family farm, near Parkerview, Saskatchewan, to parents John and Mary Hryhor, Anna was the eldest of eight children. Married to Alec Zwozdesky in 1939, Anna raised four children while helping run the family business. Family, faith and culture were at the foundation of everything Anna undertook.
Anna was an inspiring leader dedicated to arts, culture and education in the Ukrainian community. Throughout her life she served on countless boards and committees, including serving as National President of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada. A creative artist at heart, Anna wrote poetry, songs and plays, played mandolin, wrote pysanky and baked korovai. She taught Sadochok and Sunday School, and volunteered with the Ukrainian Orthodox Youth of Canada.
Predeceased by husband Alec; and son, Gene; Anna is lovingly remembered by son, John and wife Marie; daughter-in-law, Christine; daughter, Iris Ciona and husband Steve; son, Willi; Grandchildren Curtis, Roxanna, Andrea, Mike, Ariana and Myron; Great-Grandchildren Anna, Eva, Joshua, Natalka, Charlie and Natalie; and extended family in North America and Ukraine.
Prayer Service Friday, September 27, 7:30 p.m. at St. John’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, 10951 – 107 St. NW, Edmonton, Alberta.
Funeral Rite Saturday, September 28, 10:00 a.m., at St. John’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral with Very Reverend Cornell Zubritsky officiating. Interment in Evergreen Memorial Gardens will directly follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, or St. John’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral.
