Alfie Gouthro

Alfred (Alfie) Gouthro
Sydney Mines
We regret to announce the sudden passing of Alfie Gouthro, age 87, on Friday, September 13, 2019, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Da was born in Sydney Mines on May 10, 1932, to the late Ambrose and Flora (Fraser) Gouthro. He grew up on Atlantic St. when times were tough. He left school at a young age to work, as many of his generation did.
He worked a few jobs until he started working for Sydney Mines Public Works, retiring from there in 1995. He has been a long-time member of the Sydney Mines Fire Department, a position he was very proud of.
He married our Mom, Sandra (Dawe) in 1960, and they moved to Huron Ave., where he lived until Mom passed away in 2003, and then he moved in with Peter and Amy.
Alfie is survived by his loving children Charmaine, Halifax, Joe (Jennifer), Sydney, and Peter (Amy), who he lived with and who took such great care of him. His grandsons thought the world of their Poppy, and he was so proud of them. Mark, Adam, Matthew and Andrew will miss him so much.
He will also be dearly missed by Margaret White, his long-time companion, and her family. They have been good to him over the years. Freddy and Jennifer took him to a Blue Jays game, which was a great thing, and his first time in an airplane.
Alfie is also survived by his younger brother Stan (Rose), sister-in-law Yvette Gouthro, brother-in-law Jimmy MacDonald, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Alfie was predeceased by his wife Sandra, and siblings Peter, Stella, Rita, Ambrose, Eddy and Tully, and brothers and sisters-in-law.
He loved his cigarettes, sweets, and his recent addiction to McDonald’s Egg McMuffins. He was the master fudge maker. His laugh and gentle manner were loved by all. He lived a simple life, no complaints and was always happy. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Visitation for Alfie Gouthro will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2019, from 2-4 & 7-9 pm in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. A celebration of his life will take place Monday at 2 pm in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Donations in his memory may be made to the Haley St. Adult Services Centre, North Sydney. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
Rest easy, Da, we love you.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Alfie Gouthro..
