Allan Schmidt was born on January 26, 1938 in Medicine Hat, Alberta and passed away at Kootenay Lake Hospital with family at his side after a lengthy and courageous battle with many chronic illnesses on August 22nd, 2019.
Allan was predeceased by his parents Gotthielf & Bertha Schmidt, brothers Ken Schmidt, Leonard Schmidt, sisters Shirley Barber and Phyllis Sherwood.
Allan is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Eleanor Schmidt, children; son, Steven Schmidt, his two daughters, Deborah Schmidt & Sharon Schmidt and only grandson Jahi Carter and many nieces and nephews.
Raised in Redcliff, AB the Schmidt family owned a pool hall and Allan played for the house at the age of 6 and became quite a pool shark growing up. At a young age, he took the responsibility of running the pool hall for his father when he was not well.
Allan’s working career started as a psychiatric nurse/LPN and because of his fantastic love of vintage cars, he decided to take a trade in auto body mechanics, which he did at the age of 36. He excelled in the field and enjoyed it very much. In 1983, he took a second trade as an auto mechanic. His children benefited from his talents in the automotive trade with him fixing up cars for each one of them.
After retirement, he enrolled in the fine woodworking course at Selkirk College and used the skills he learned to build for his family.
He was involved in his community, such as a Cub Leader for Boy Scouts of Canada for 8 years and impacted many young lives. He was honoured a hero with a Sealed Award from The CEA Lifesaving Award when rescuing an unconscious male driver from a burning vehicle in 1986.
When his health allowed him, he enjoyed working on the electric tram at the lake front.
Allan came from a very musical family, although he never played an instrument he loved country music and classic blues such as Downchild’s, Flip Flop & Fly.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial will be held in his honour at a later date. Thompson Funeral Service has been entrusted with the arrangements.
The family would like to thank the nurses and Doctors in Emergency and on 3rd floor of Kootenay Lake Hospital for their care. Also the family would like to recognize the services of Dr. Lisa Vasil who looked after Allan for many years.
He will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace, Al
