Johnson, Louise Doris (Humbke)
It is with heavy hearts and much love that we announce the passing of Louise Johnson into the arms of her Saviour on August 17, 2019. She will be forever remembered by Stanford, her loving husband of 63 years, children Sheila, Luanne (Curtis), Marla, Dale, and grandchildren Heather, Cameron, Kari, Mia, Hala, Alanna (Derrick), Grace, Browen, Gareth, Kai, Noah, and Alexandra. Louise will also be sadly missed by brother Stan (Annaliese), her twin brother Len (Pat), and sisters Shirley and Elaine. Louise was predeceased by her brother Ronald.
Louise was devoted to her husband and family. She doted on her grandchildren and encouraged them to set the bar high and work hard. She was generous and compassionate, prioritizing the needs of others and welcoming all to her home. She was a wise mentor, a lifelong learner, a gifted teacher, artist, chef, and gardener.
Louise was dedicated to upholding higher education and fundraised for many years for the Scandinavian Studies program at the University of Alberta, her alma mater where she earned degrees in Scandinavian Studies and Education as well as a post-graduate certificate in teaching English as a Second Language. After working several years as a partner in the family business, Louise taught English at both the University of Alberta and in Korea.
A lifetime member of the Sons of Norway, Louise and Stan established and taught the Valhalla Junior Scandinavian Folk Dancers, a group which included several of her own grandchildren. During this time, she sewed 17 Norwegian costumes (bunads). Louise was a tireless volunteer in her community and at the Scandinavian Pavilion at Heritage Days where she performed as a folk dancer, led children’s folk dancing performances, and helped prepare and serve food. As an adult, she became fluent in Norwegian through study in Oslo, Norway, and studied Spanish in Guatemala.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the doctors and staff at the Cross Cancer Institute and the Edmonton General Hospital Unit 9Y, for their compassionate care. Louise felt very blessed by the staff of 9Y.
A celebration of life will be held September 20th, 2019, at 1 p.m. at Hosanna Lutheran Church, 9009 163 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5R 2N8. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Lutheran World Relief at www.clwr.org/donate, or Hope Mission at www.hopemission.com/donate, or a charity of one’s choice.
