Lawrence Dohey
October 23, 1959 – August 28, 2019
Passed away suddenly Lawrence Joseph Dohey, archivist – researcher – observer of traditions – some that are lost, of St. Bride’s and St. John’s. Larry leaves his much loved province the richer for the stories he celebrated in his Archival Moments, on-line and on-air. His name can be found in the acknowledgments of scores of books, articles, films, documentaries, plays and theses. He happily shared his time and knowledge so as to spread our stories. He volunteered with countless national, provincial and local boards, organizations and causes, including the Newfoundland and Labrador Historical Society, the National and Provincial Archives Associations, the Irish Newfoundland Association and the Bannerman Park and Victoria Park revitalization committees.
Larry loved his work, which he saw as a celebration of everything of Newfoundland and Labrador. He brought enthusiasm and energy to everything he did. He approached 8am Monday morning and 5pm Friday with equal amounts of joy. He believed in the love of family and friends, hard work, the importance of fun and the power of yes.
Larry was predeceased by his parents Loretta (Nash) and Clem Dohey, his brother Billy and his parents-in-law Geraldine (Duff) and Gerard Martin. Left with broken hearts and more happy memories than one lifetime should be able to hold are his husband Ian Martin; his sisters and brothers: Eta Nash (Anthony), George (Patricia), Eric, Frances Mills (Fred), Pat (Pauline Broderick), Father Wayne, Doreen Traverse (Dominic), Jean Dohey, Sandra Manning (Fabian), Orinda Careen (Jerry) and Marie MacKenzie (Lloyd); brothers and sisters-in-law: Gerard (Anne Storey), Christina Doyle, Paul, Darlene (David Nixon) and Tracy (Terry O’Rourke); and wonderful and much loved nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and a large circle of relatives and friends.
Resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road, St. John’s on Saturday, August 31 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm and Sunday, September 1 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Mass of Christian Burial to be held at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist, Military Road, St. John’s, Monday September 2 at 1pm.
