Lauchlin ‘Lauchie’ Gerard MacDougall
1941-2019
MacDougall, Lauchlin
“Lauchie” – With absolute regret we announce
the peaceful passing of Lauchlin “Lauchie” Gerard
MacDougall, age 77, formerly of West Bay Road and Inverness.
Surrounded by family and love, Lauchie passed away on Monday, August
26, 2019 in Halifax.
Always a Cape Bretoner, Lauchie was born in Inverness to JB
and Martha (MacLellan) MacDougall and continued to live in the county
during his life. In his early years, he was known as a tough lefty on
the mound playing baseball, making lifelong friends and generally
being a character around town. This trait carried on, as any of you
that knew him would attest to. But a defining characteristic was his
love for Sherry, his wife of 53 years. He doted on her, while they
smiled, socialized and danced their way from Cape Breton to Florida to
Portugal and all locations in between.
Together, Lauchie and Sherry lovingly raised three children;
Debbie, Rhonda and Shane. The loss of Debbie in 1991 was devastating,
but their bond and dedication to their other children persevered.
Having grandchildren was no question a blessing to them both and
Lauchie loved each one of them in his own Papa way.
Almost his entire career was spent at ‘The
Mill’ in Point Tupper, CB, where he was a shift supervisor
and regular card player. Lauchie also volunteered, including time with
the West Bay Road Fire Dept and the Canadian Diabetes Association,
where he was the first President and a founder of the Port Hawkesbury
Chapter. Never one to sit still for long, Lauchie was always
puttering, fixing and building something for someone. Many family and
friends benefitted from his constant energy and need to be helpful.
When he did slow down his favourite things to do were listen to the
Ceilidh, read a book or golf. All activities that captured his
complete attention.
Lauchie loved being social. He would cook for everyone, pour
you a drink and tell you a story. Lauchie and Sherry’s home
or trailer was always the gathering spot where friends and family
spent time and over the years where everyone was made to feel
welcome.
Lauchie, Dad, Papa’s passing is an enormous loss to
us all. So many have expressed that ‘he was one of the good
ones’ and that his energy will never be forgotten. To us,
his family, we have a void where there was constant love and support.
Yet we have such amazing memories of a life together, filled with
music, dancing, laughter and love that we know we are blessed to have
had him for as long as we did.
Lauchie is survived by his wife, Sherry (MacLean), Stillwater
Lake; daughter, Rhonda (Brian Rourke); son, Shane (Joan) and
grandchildren, Bannon, Davin, Ewan, Eilish and Cullen; sister, Isabel
(Ken), Calgary; brothers, Malcolm (Sheila), Dartmouth; Harold,
Parksville, BC and Joe (Sheila), Inverness and many loving nieces and
nephews. Lauchie was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Debbie;
parents, JB and Martha (MacLellan) MacDougall; brother and sister
in-law, John and Anne MacDougall; in-laws, Michael (Mickey) and Sarah
(Sadie) (Morrison) MacLean.
Visitation will take place 2-5 and 7-9 p.m., Thursday, August
29 in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 724 Granville Street, Port
Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m., Friday, August 30, St.
Margaret’s Roman Catholic Church, West Bay Road with Father
Duncan MacIsaac officiating. Burial will follow in the parish
cemetery. A reception will follow in the West Bay Road Fire Hall.
