Rev. James’ Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Rev. James (Jim) Harris Appleton on July 17th 2019 in Pugwash, Nova Scotia. Beloved Husband to Heather (nee MacLean), Dearly missed father to Ian (Katie), Sarah (Michael Mayich) and Rebecca (Eammon Guitard), Grampy to Georgia, Ava and Benjamin, brother to Dorothy Vaughan and Jeff Appleton (Shelley), Brother-in-law to Marg Smith and Allison Morrison (Stewart), Fondly remembered Uncle to David Dorton, Jack & Grace Appleton, Connor & Emily Smith, Cameron & Spencer Morrison, and a cousin to many in Nova Scotia and Florida. Survived by his uncle Howard Harris (Carol) in Ft. Myers, Florida and his mother-in-law, Suzanne MacLean in Toronto with whom he shared a special relationship and nightly phone calls.
Born in Moncton, NB to Arthur and Olive Appleton on September 12th, 1953. Jim graduated Moncton High School (1971), Mount Allison University (1975), and UNB Law (1978). He had several careers spanning from Fredericton to Yellowknife to Halifax and back. In 1991, Jim was elected to the District 26 School Board and was integral in the creation of the New Maryland Elementary School. He later served on the first Village Council in the newly incorporated Village of New Maryland.
Later in life, Jim returned to study at the Atlantic School of Theology where he obtained a Master of Arts (Theology) and was currently serving on the AST Board of Governors. In 2018, Jim was ordained as a Deacon in the Anglican Church of Canada and was called to the priesthood later the same year. For the past year, he was the incumbent Priest in the Anglican Parish of Fredericton Junction and worked as a Palliative Care Chaplin at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Jim was devoted to his Parish Community and was passionate about his calling to the ministry.
For those who knew him, Jim could light up a room with his presence. Jim loved life and everyone in it. Jim had a fantastic sense of humour and a kind heart. He would strike up a conversation with anyone and everyone he met and was a great listener. Jim was always willing to lend a hand or raise a glass. He loved music, reading, history, travel, Mount Allison, the Leafs, a good TV series, happy hour on the deck at the cottage, and most importantly, he loved his family.
Jim spent every summer of his life at the family cottage on Mitchell’s Beach, Pugwash NS, which was his favourite destination; his “perfect” place in the world. This passion was rooted both in his deep love for this place, as well as his family with whom he shared it. Nothing brought him more joy than watching his family grow and sharing in their accomplishments. He was the centre of our family, our anchor, and will be forever missed.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday July 23rd, 2019 at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 1224 Route 101, Nasonworth, NB at 2 pm. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Anglican Parish of Fredericton Junction (4332 Heritage Dr., Tracy, NB E5L1B5) or to the James Appleton Bursary at Mount Allison University [make a secure donation online at www.mta.ca or call (866) 890-6318].
