It is with great sadness that on July 27, 2019 at 81 years of age we announce the passing of George William Hamilton at Roseway Manor in Shelburne, N.S. Born in Yarmouth on February 1,1938 he was a son of the late George William Hamilton and Edna Alva (Lennox) Hamilton. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his sister Laurena Goodwin; brothers, Richard Hamilton and F.O. Douglas Hamilton; and great-granddaughter, MaCali Cormier. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 58 years, Mary Ruth (Stevens) Hamilton and daughters, Leah Ann Hamilton and Beth Lorraine (Roland) Hannem. He was an entertaining Grampy to Laura Fevens (Troy Sloan), Christina Fevens, Jocelyn LeBlanc (Matthew Cormier) and Allison LeBlanc and proud Great-Grampy to Nate, Hayden, Tessa and Matthew. He is also survived by sisters, Brenda Cosman, Dorothy (Bennett) d’Entremont, Myrna Allen and brother, Alan (Suzan Yeates) Hamilton. Also surviving him is his life-long friend, Joseph Sewards.
George’s greatest passion and pleasure in life was his extended family. He loved them all very dearly. He enjoyed family gatherings at the cottage, family breakfast dates and the many other occasions and celebrations. After graduating from the Saint John Vocational School in 1957, George worked for the Federal Department of Transportation in the Canadian Arctic in Telecommunications for several years. He was a Radio Operator, Shift Supervisor and Station-Officer-in-Charge at several northern sites. He then returned to school to pursue a teaching career. He graduated from the Toronto Teachers College, earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Toronto and a Master of School Administration from Acadia University. He taught in Toronto and at the Hebron Junior High School in Hebron, Nova Scotia. He was manager of the Nova Scotia NewStart Adult Education Centre in Yarmouth and spent 22 years at the Yarmouth Vocational School/NSCC Burridge Campus where he was a teacher, vice-principal and then principal.
George was an active member of his community. He served as a Municipal Councillor, Chairman of the Yarmouth Municipal School Board, the Regional Hospital and Harbourside Lodge Boards, the Airport Commission and numerous other boards, committees and charities. He particularly enjoyed serving for many years of the Boards of the Kaye Nickerson Adult Services Centre and Yarmouth County Family and Children’s Services.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. Visitation will be held Monday July 29,2019 from 7-9 P.M. in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. A Celebration of George’s life will take place Tuesday July 30,2019 at 2 P.M. in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Moses Officiating. Interment will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Pubnico N.S. Family flowers only please. Donations in memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
