Born July 10th, 1922, Elsie, along with her sister Ina (deceased) spent her early years helping out in the family store before selling it and moving to Alliston in 1944. Graduating from nursing college, she began a career in pediatrics at Stevenson Memorial Hospital where she met her future husband, David McAteer, who passed away in December of 1989. They married on May 21st, 1966 at their home on Albert Street in Alliston. Elsie immediately became stepmother to David’s sons – Charles, Keith,… Read More » Larry and Donny.
Elsie was active in her community and church. While her husband, David, volunteered with the upkeep of the church grounds, Elsie volunteered with meal preparation for any church functions. She had a full social life, at one point becoming the Worthy Matron in the Eastern Star while her husband was Grand Master of the Masons.
Elsie enjoyed spending a lot of time with her family at all the gatherings and sleepovers. Often times she could be found in the kitchen assisting with meal preparation and all the laughing and giggling associated with that. All that experience with meal preparation for the church certainly came in handy and earned her the family title of “best darn potato peeler in the world”.
She is survived by her eldest stepson – Charles McAteer of Barrie. Her legacy includes Granddaughters; Patricia D’ambroso & Guy of Acton, Gail Virgoe & Georger of New Lowell, Frances Mathewson & Paul of Barrie, Shannon McAteer of winnipeg, Manitoba. Great Grandchildren; Kirk & Kristy, Emily & Brad, Nicole & Randy, Matthew, Chance and Piper and Great Great Grandchildren; Kaitlyn and Braylyn.
A private service will be held for Elsie with close family to attend.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Elsie Marie McAteer July 10 1922 July 12 2019..
