Dolores (Harrietha) Casey, 81, of Glendale, Cape Breton, passed away Friday, July 19th at St. Vincent’s Nursing Home in Halifax. Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of Niel and Josephine (MacNeil) Harrietha. Throughout her life, she continually demonstrated her dedication to helping others. After being raised for most of her childhood in the community of Glendale, NS, she began her life of dedication by devoting herself to the Roman Catholic Church as a nun with the Sisters Of Service where she was stationed across the country to help others, including at Pier 21 in Halifax to greet new Canadians. She then recognized a call within herself to raise a family. She left the order and married Francis Casey of Edmonton, Alberta. He was a perfect match for her as they shared a common love of a life surrounded by kids. They moved to Sarnia, Ontario as school teachers and began a lifelong dedication to children. While adopting seven children and giving birth to two, she continued a full career as a beloved Elementary teacher across the city and the strong and loving matriarch of the Sarnia Casey Clan. Once retired, and her children grown and moved to start families of their own, she returned to Glendale to bring that dedication full circle. She spent her retirement years with a commitment to helping the community that raised her, through the involvement and spear heading of countless projects, including craft, quilting, weaving, and gardening clubs for community members aged 2-100. Also, throughout all her life, her love of Gaelic, the Cape Breton Fiddle, square dancing, and songs of Cape Breton had always connected her to the island and her love of a good Ceilidh, so her return was inevitable.
She is survived by her sisters Cecilia Kelly, Alma Murphy, and Sarah Cameron, and her children James (Linda) Love, Bruce (Jan) Casey, Doug Casey, Charlene Casey, Mary (John) Meadows, April (Henry) Demooy, Beverley-Jean (Trevor) Lafont, Aylene (Brian) Gracie, and Andrew (Beverly) Casey. She was predeceased by her husband Frank Casey, brothers Aloysius “Wish” Harrietha and Ronald Harrietha, and sisters Mary “Carmelita” MacDonald and Reynelda Young. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren included Christine, Andrew, Jamie, Shelby Dawnn, Kember, Holly Anne, Kevin, Ian, Eric, Meaghan, Erin, Rachel, Cameron, Keely, Ashley, Alexander, Laura, Daniel, Nathan, Ana, Madison, Mackenzie, Lily, Koda, Kash, Kayden, Noah, Genevieve, Brookelynn, Bowden, Payge, and Peityn.
Her remains will rest at Green’s Funeral Home in Port Hawkesbury with visitation from 2-4pm and 7-9pm on Sunday, July 28th. The funeral will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, July 29th at St. Mary of the Angels in Glendale with internment at the parish cemetery with Rev. Duncan officiating.
Memorial Donations may be made to the Father John Angus Rankin Cultural Centre/ Taigh an t-Sagair or through the purchasing of a Mass card with your local parish.
