Alfred’s Obituary
Alfred Halbgebauer (August 27, 1934 – July 20, 2019) in his 85th year passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday. Survived by his wife of 61 years Brigitte (nee Bunning) Halbgebauer, daughter Sabine (Manuel), son Michael (Andrea) and daughter Petra (Cort) and grandchildren Christopher, Nicklas, Emmon, Mya, Emily, Cort, and his two sisters in Germany, Heidi Tobler and Iris Hoffle. Alfred was born in Czechoslovakia and was separated from his father at the age of 7 during the war. At the age of 12 he was reunited with his father and lived in Diedlesheim, Germany. In 1956 he made the ocean journey with his friend and arrived in Montreal with $7 in his pocket and not knowing a word of English. While working in Blind River he suffered a severe injury and he spent 22 months in the hospital, where he learned how to play chess. The love his life, his beloved Brigitte followed him from Germany. They were married on May 3, 1958. In 1959 they settled in St. Catherines where he worked as a tool and die maker until he retired in 1989. In 1963 Alfred and his family relocated to Traverston and Alfred then commuted to St.Catharines every week. He loved reading the newspaper everyday, cars, sports and was a connoisseur of spirits. He was an avid runner, swimmer, ping pong player and later took on the game tennis. Alfred could always be found swimming in his pond, stacking many cords of wood and overall just providing for his family with a glass in his hand. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for the amazing care that he received at Grey Gables. Cremation has taken place and the family will have a private memorial.
