Rosemarie “Mimi” Benoit
Mimi passed away after a short illness, at the Ottawa Civic Hospital on Friday June 7th, at the age of 75. The daughter of the late Georges and Rosemary Benoit, she was the much- loved sister of Brien (Thérèse), Pierre (Kathleen), Paul (Catherine) and David (Jackie). Beloved aunt to Vicki, Avril, Carol (Ivan), Peter (Andrea), Christopher, Brad, Rebecca (Matt), Jean-Marc (Renata) and Daniel (Julia). Adored grand-mother figure as “Nana “and “Vovó Mimi ” to Nicholas and Liam (Vicki), Ben and Mimi (Avril), Amanda and Chloe (Carol) , Tiana (Peter), Jenson (Christopher) , Francesco, Marie-Flor and Clara (Jean-Marc) and Morgan and Max(Daniel). She was a graduate of the University of Ottawa with a Bachelor of Arts in 1965 and Master Library Science in 1972, Magna Cum Laude, because 98% was never good enough! Fluently bilingual, she worked in various departments within the federal government, ending her career as the chief librarian for the Commissioner of Official Languages. Mimi was a tireless volunteer: as a teacher in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and as a mentor and tutor to children who were newcomers to Canada at the Elgin Street Public School. The Ottawa Hospital named her “Volunteer of the Year ” for her efforts at the Riverside Campus, and more recently, she was a favourite at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Homeless people and their dogs in her neighbourhood knew her for her friendship and generosity. She was a baby and pet sitter extraordinaire, and her love of animals knew no bounds. No dog or cat could pass by without being stroked or cuddled, and she was a strong supporter of the Humane Society. Merci Mimi! Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor), Ottawa on Saturday, June 22, 2019 from 10 a.m. until the Celebration of Life to be held in the Chapel at 11 a.m., with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Ottawa Humane Society in Mimi Benoit’s honour.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Rosemarie Mimi
