  1. Very sad to read this.

Very surprised to find another Garth Ballantyne!!

I would be interested to correspond with a family member as to any connections our two families might have.

    I am also:
    Garth Ballantyne!!

  2. I was saddened to read Garth’s death notice.
I did not know him but my name is also Garth Ballantyne.
My name, both Garth and Ballantyne, derive from convicts sent to Tasmania on the “First Fleet”. Subsequently, they immigrated to New Zealand. My Grandfather, Kenneth Ballantyne, Garth Ballantyne’s brother, immigrated to the USA at the time of World War 1. Garth, a pacifist, refused to fight in WW1 when drafted into the New Zealand military. He was tried, convicted of treason and condemned to death by firing squad. Eventually, he was pardoned and helped to establish the concept of Conscientious Objectors within the British Empire.
I would be interested in your Garth’s family history to see if we were related.

  3. Sorry if this redundant. I can’t tell if my first attempt was sent.
My name is also Garth Ballantyne. I live in Connecticut. I was named for my Great Uncle Garth Ballantyne who lived in New Zealand. The Garths and the Ballantyne’s from whom our names descended were convicts who were sent to Tasmania on the First Fleet. Descendants first immigrated to New Zealand and then to the United States.
It was my Grandfather, Kenneth Morrin Ballantyne and his brother, Ainslie Morrin Ballantyne that came to the United States. Ainslie pursued a career as an Architect. He designed many buildings and hospitals including the Neogothic buildings at Yale University and much of the 20th Century buildings at Harvard University. He was also a noted designer of hospital including Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, Northwestern Memorial Hospital and additions to the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital.
Kenneth became an illustrator who formed a partnership with Harry Morse Meyers. Their illustrations frequently graced the pages of Life, Look and other national magazines.
I would enjoy further discussing the Ballantyne family history.
