Robertine “Robbie” O’Connor
1922-2019
Robertine O’Connor
nee Vandaele, 96, with family members present, passed away peacefully
on Wednesday, April 17, at Carveth Care Centre, Gananoque, Ontario,
where she had been residing since
2015.
A long-time resident of Moncton, New Brunswick,
Robbie had relocated to Brockville, Ontario, in 2010. Born
in Baarle-Hertog, Belgium, married in 1945 and, as a War Bride, in
1946 immigrated to Canada on the vessel, the Lady Nelson, and
disembarked at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova
Scotia.
She was predeceased in 2006 by her
husband, John B. O’Connor, her parents, Gilbert
Vandaele/Flavia Santy (both deceased in 1978) and her brother, Albert
Vandaele (1991).
Robbie was a proud housewife and stay at home mother
raising two children. She was a member of St. Augustine’s Church and
the Moncton Lions Senior Citizens Association and an avid bridge
player for over 60 years. Passionate about knitting and
needlepoint, she enjoyed swimming, reading, travelled with her husband
across Canada and throughout the States and parts of
Europe.
With her husband, John, Robbie shared a mutual
interest of attending coin shows in various parts of the
Maritimes.
Robbie was a very quiet, unassuming, gracious woman
with a gentle demeanor. She will be greatly missed by her
daughter, Elisabeth (Betty) Dyckow, Gananoque, Ontario, and her son,
Mark O’Connor (Sheila), Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. All residing in
Quebec, she was a cherished Grammie to her grandchildren, Dean Dyckow,
Debra Dyckow (Pierre Derome) and a proud and loving Gramz/Grams to her
beautiful great grandchildren: Emily,
Alexandre, Mathieu, Ryan, Olivia and Chloe. Also,
she is survived by her Belgium relatives including her sister-in-law,
Gaby Vandaele-de-Poorter. Robertine was known as Tante Robbie to her
several nieces and nephews and their
children.
Funeral service at Fergusons Funeral Home Chapel,
1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) on Saturday, May 4, 2019, 11:00
a.m. Father Allison Carroll will be presiding, with a
reception following the service. Interment, Our Lady of
Calvary Cemetery, Dieppe.
In Robbie’s memory donations to the NB Alzheimer’s
Society or Friends of The Moncton Hospital would be greatly
