After a long and fulfilling life, Bert passed away at the age of 97 with family members by his side.
He was predeceased by his wife Dorval (Val) in 2007 and his granddaughter Shannon in 2018
He is survived by his children, Glen (Janet), Jane, Randy (Kim) Margo, Gary (Heather) as well as his
9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Bert is also survived by his second wife Sadie Calen,
and her children, Linda and Larry.
Bert was born in Norfolk, North Walsham, England At age 18 Bert enlisted in the RAF as a Morse Code
Operator and spent time in Brazil and the Bahamas. He decided to settle in Canada, get married and start his family in Manitoba as well as his long working career at Eaton’s where he retired at age 55.
After his retirement he was a very busy guy, he was always puttering around his yard gardening or fixing something. He loved to fish and would go anytime, anywhere and with anyone. Dad also loved to go to the horse races and continued to go very recently. He loved to play all card games but especially loved
to play cribbage and would always remind us of his “29 “hand. He would never leave home without his harmonica and would start playing if you asked or even if you didn’t ask. He played a few tunes in the last few months for his hospital roommates and nursing staff and any others who wandered to his room to listen.
Dad was the original “Uber,” he was always driving the kids and their friends to whatever event they were doing. He loved to watch the kids play hockey, baseball, dance or whatever they were involved in.
He continued to enjoy it for many years with his grandchildren as well.
He will be sadly missed by his family and friends and we take comfort knowing he is with Mom and Shannon.
At his request there will not be a funeral.
The family will have a private gathering at a later date when Bert will be put to rest beside Val at Brookside Cemetery.
