Ella Wolf (nee Wegner)
January 23rd 1930 – April 6th 2019
Born to Klara Wegner (nee Becker) and Gustav Wegner, in Kamtschatka , a small farming village in Bessarabia (now Ukraine) on the Black Sea, Ella enjoyed an idyllic early life in the rhythms of horses and harvests. Ella often spoke lovingly of these early days as the apple of her father Gustav’s eyes and the adored younger sister of brother, Albert. (Another daughter had been born to the couple 2 years earlier, who died just months after birth. Ella was named after her, as was then customary).
In the weeks before WWII, Ella’s family had to leave their home in Bessarabia and was resettled near Lodz, Poland. She often reminisced about these young teen years as a time of laughter, singing and good friends. War forced the family to move again and in 1945 Ella arrived in Nendingen, Germany where she eventually met her future husband, Anton Wolf. They married there in 1952 and emigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1955 with their first daughter, Gerda, in tow.
Two more children quickly followed and the young couple, with their children Gerda, Evelyn and Brian, moved to their first home in Scarborough in 1961. A strong-willed and hard working Ella helped the family prosper, with plenty of time in-between for new friends, laughter and singing. Ella was always singing it seemed, and was always ready with a warm greeting and big smile for any newcomer to her home.
In the mid 80’s Ella and Anton (Tony) built their retirement home in Sutton where they enjoyed country life and where grandchildren were welcomed – Shannon, David, Jessica, Sarah, Karen, Kathryn and Mitchell all spent happy times there, and in recent years great-grandchildren Drake and Hunter, followed by Nafisa in 2017 were added to her legacy. Her healthy and happy family remained the center of Ella’s life through her later years. Her immense pride and joy when all were gathered around her table enjoying one of her famous cakes, was always evident.
Alzheimer’s disease had a formidable rival in the strong-willed and proud Ella, who fought hard against it, until she couldn’t. She died peacefully, after receiving ever-attentive palliative care by Bradford Care Community’s Orchard House staff, around 5:00pm on April 6th.
Ella’s warmth, laughter and strength will be dearly missed as the rock at the center of her family’s lives. She will be honoured at a memorial service for family and friends on May 4th.
