Clifford William Newton
Clifford William “Sonny” Newton passed peacefully from this life on March 29, 2019 at Health Sciences North in Sudbury, ON, surrounded by his loving family quietly singing Amazing Grace. He is predeceased by his parents Clifford Leonard Newton (1995) and Wilma “Billie” MacMillan (1989), his sister Lois Sharon Bowins (2018), and his brother Gregory Sean Newton (1975). He is survived by his devoted wife, Marjorie (née Prine), his children Russell Newton (Deanna) Morin-Heights QC; Samuel Newton (Leah), Maple Ridge BC; Sarah Turner (Andrew) Toronto ON; and their mother Mary Lorra “Lo” Bush (Brian), Elliot Lake ON. Also survived by his sisters Sandra Lahaie (Guy), Porcupine; Maureen Newton, Toronto; Margaret Matsumura (Terry), North Carolina; Lorraine Newton-Comar (Andrew) and Mary Newton, Newmarket. Wonderful “Poppa” to his grandchildren Foster, Ella May, and Everett Newton and Robbie Turner. Brother-in-law to Nancy and Robert Villeneuve, Hanmer; George and Lisa Prine, Kitchener; Lynne Prine, Port Colborne; Sharon and Nick Neely, Oklahoma; and Lyne (late Wayne) Ballantyne, Brantford. Uncle to Brian, Jennifer, Jonathan, Rhia, Kimiko, Kenji, Gregory, Noah, Keegan, Chad, Katrina, Jordan, Emily, Shannon, Chris, Rachel, Lauren, Joey, Alis, Jake, Jon, Kim, Nick, Kathy, and Carrie. Sonny’s life touched many other extended family and friends. His work included elementary school teaching, policing (Mississauga and Timmins), security, and other jobs. Sonny loved music and whistling. His tenor voice joined the Northern Harmony Singers, the Timmins Symphony Chorus, and other groups. He loved nature, camping, snowshoeing, walking, swimming, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking, hunting, leather tooling, reading, playing scrabble, eating, dancing, writing letters, traveling, creative woodworking and family history. He had great compassion for the downtrodden, an engaging smile and laugh, eyes that sparkled with joy and light, and deep faith and trust in His Saviour. He loved God, family, and friends and knew how to live each day with gladness and gratitude to God for all life’s blessings. Until we meet again, Sonny will remain forever in our hearts and memories.
Visitation from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 3rd at Lessard-Stephens Funeral Home.
Funeral service at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 500 Toke St., Timmins, ON at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 4. In lieu of flowers, remembrance donations to the Good Samaritan Inn or a charity of choice would be appreciated.
