In Loving Memory of
Peter “Pete” Robert Bonish
94 years
Wednesday, March 6th, 2019 at home
It is with deep sadness our family announces Pete’s sudden, but peaceful passing.
Pete was born in a cook house car on February 3rd, 1925 in Cupar, Saskatchewan to his parents Paul and Olga Bonish. Pete grew up working on the family farm.
As a young man, he left Saskatchewan in search of employment. His journey landed him in Sudbury where INCO was hiring. Once he had secured a job, Pete sent for his high school sweetheart Evelyn Gibson to join him in Sudbury where they were married in 1948 at St. Paul’s United Church.
Always a hard worker and an entrepreneur, Pete began by buying a panel truck to transport fellow workers to and from the mines. In the late 1940s while still working for INCO, Pete started his business Pete’s Home Radio Service, repairing and installing radios. His business was located at 351 Regent Street in the same building as Bob’s Washers and Len Smith Signs. In 1959 Pete changed the name and moved the business, Pete’s Drive-In Radio, to 291 Regent Street. There was no stopping Pete, his business grew and expanded to Pete’s Radio and Rent-All, then to Pete’s Rentall Limited and currently Pete’s Party and Tent Rentall.
Pete’s joy was spending as much time as possible at his camp on Trout Lake making wonderful family memories. A pioneer of the north shore, he built roads, constructed buildings and served on both the Trout Lake Roads Board and the Trout Lake Campers Association. Pete’s passion was woodworking. He milled fallen trees, planed the wood then crafted it into everything from cribbage boards to lamps, clocks, furniture, and buildings. He also built pine boxes for the cremated remains of family and friends. He even built a box for his own ashes and would often say, “I made my box out of oak as I am allergic to pine.” Only a few years ago while in his 90s, Pete was still making harvest style tables for our Rental business. Pete was a respected, kind, knowledgeable mentor and friend to many. He had an incredible sense of humour and enjoyed sharing laugh out loud tales from his life. His past experiences and stories were always a joy to listen to. Pete will be truly missed by all who knew him.
Beloved husband and best friend of Evelyn (Gibson) Bonish predeceased 2012. Loving father of Dan (Sue), Doug, and Tim (Wendy). Wonderful Poppa of Peter Aaron, Benjamin (Heather), Jason (Nicky), Sarah and Jessica. Cherished great Poppa of Mylaine, Isabelle, Kain, and Rya. Dear son of Paul and Olga (Ewert) Bonish both predeceased. Dear brother of Allen (Donna), Edna Warren, and predeceased by Elmer, Elma, Herbert, Erwin, and David. Special Uncle to many nieces and nephews.
At Pete’s request there will be no public visitation or service. Cremation at the Park Lawn Crematorium. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring. Arrangements entrusted to the Lougheed Funeral Home.
