Joan’s Obituary
Joan was born in Winnipeg Manitoba. She lived there for 14 years before her parents Adelaide & Albert Volkart relocated their family (Ed, Doug, Jean, Joan, Irene, and Gertie) to Finntown on McKenzie Island in 1947.
Joan remained in the Red Lake District making Cochenour her home where she raised her family Linda, James, Glen and Dale.
Joan’s entrepreneurial spirit was instilled by her father who owned a number of businesses including one on the Island called “POP’S BOOK SHOP”. It was with this foundation that Joan, side by side with Wilbert, helped build “HAYWARD’S LAKESHORE MARINA”. Joan worked tirelessly at the Marina until 2006 where she was always available for a conversation over a cup of coffee. Joan was a fun loving person who was up to the task of performing comical skits in the old Cochenour Hall or she thoroughly enjoyed snowmobiling, boating, hunting and fishing. No matter how many hours she had worked Joan always had the time to spoil her grandchildren, whether playing video games well past bedtime or preparing a special early morning breakfast for them; they always came first.
Joan’s generous ways touched many. Her caring nature remained a genuine quality of her personality throughout her final years at Pinecrest, District of Kenora Home for the Aged.
Joan was pre-deceased by both of her parents, siblings Ed, Doug & Irene as well as Wilbert Hayward (2018) and Louis Baker (1958). Joan is survived by her children Linda Robinson, James (Lynn) Hayward, Glen (Cindy) Hayward, Dale Hayward, grandchildren Candice, Bradley, Sheena, Dayna, Darcy, Hillary, Brittney, Stefanie, 9 great-grandchildren and her sisters Jean Husack and Gertrude Litwin.
Joan will be greatly missed and always remembered.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday February 9th at 11:00am at the United Church in Red Lake with Keith Graber officiating.
A private interment will follow at the Woodland Cemetery, Balmertown.
Donations in honour of Joan may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or Pinecrest Home for the Aged through the Red Lake Chapel, Box 237, Red Lake, ON, P0V 2M0.
