Obituary of Anthony (“Tony”) Neil Shearer
Anthony (Big “T”) Shearer was born in the industrial city of Glasgow, Scotland on January 13, 1942. After a long, hard fought battle he died very peacefully on January 21, 2019. Tony was a loving husband to Marie (predeceased), dedicated, and fun-loving, “never say no” Dad to Gillian and Kirsten, “a guy’s guy” of a father-in-law to John and Jamie, adored Papa to Charlotte, Ciaran, James and Asha, brother to Ian (predeceased), brother-in-law to Anne and Ron, uncle to Audrey, Janice, Linda and Natalie, son to the late Sabina (Bina) and John, son-in-law to the late May and Nathanial (“Nat”), and adopted “uncle Tony” to so many. Tony will be remembered for his love of sport, especially soccer. As a solid sweeper, he was marvelous in the air, and protected his keeper no matter the opponent. Those who played against him may still have the scars. In his later years, as his family grew and his girls came into the sport, he spent countless nights and weekends coaching them, and their teammates. He was a calm, patient, and kind coach. The kind you never forget. Tony loved to entertain. Some would say, a bit too much, but he always made you feel welcome. And he never let you leave without a song. His was “It’s a Wonderful World.” …. And that is what he lived in, with his family and dear friends, albeit a life cut far too short in many ways. In lieu of flowers, should you wish, donations can be made in Tony’s memory to the charity entitled “Soccer without Boundaries” at www.soccerwithoutboundaries.org Soccer Without Boundaries is an innovative, multi-cultural outreach program aimed at integrating new Canadians into their community through soccer and music. In honour of Tony, they will be issuing a named soccer jersey at their next youth program. Donations are also encouraged at the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada at https: //alzheimer.ca Visitation will be held at Andrews Community Funeral Centre on Sunday January 27, 2019 @ 8190 Dixie Road, Brampton Ontario from 10:00 am until Noon – service to follow.
