Peacefully at St Viateur Nursing Home, Limoges, ON on January 23, 2019, Phyllis May Benson Walsh Sweezey at the age of 87. Predeceased by her husbands Augustine Walsh and Archibald Sweezey; parents Sarah and Nehemiah Benson; sisters Francis Leppla and Gladys Hayley, brother Chesley Benson. Left with many fond and loving memories are his daughter Helen; son Robert (Marie-Marthe); and her much loved grandchildren Emilie and Francis; sisters Marion Holmen, Doris (Jonas) Weinrauch, Margaret (Melvyn) Gold; brothers Fred, Harry (Joan),and Roger (Barbara); brothers-in-law Albert (Maisie) Walsh, Phil (Marion) Walsh; sister-in-law Sister Alice Walsh and many nieces and nephews.
Phyllis spent most of her career in the retail fashion business. After being a long time employee of Riff’s Windsor and Springdale, NL, she took up residence in Chatham NB. With her strong entrepreneurial spirit and significant experience at Riffs, she opened Sweezey’s Clothing in Chatham.
After retiring in the 1980 she spent a year at Memorial University, St John’s, three years in Germany and in 1985 moved to Ottawa to be closer to her children, and eventually became involved as a volunteer in the office of the Good Companions Seniors’ Centre in Ottawa.
Phyllis loved to travel, and did so across Canada and to much of Europe, and Egypt, Israel and to warmer locals such as Mexico, Hawaii, Florida and the Caribbean. She loved to regale her dinner guests with her many stories of her travels but none more than about back home in NL and her beloved Gus.
Her last few years were spent at Russell Meadows Retirement Lodge in Russell, ON, where she had many happy days, continuing her daily walking routine and making many friends.
She will be laid to rest this summer in her home town of Grand Falls/Windsor beside her beloved Gus.
