Marc’s Obituary
Marc H. Wermager, age 75 passed away in his Red Lake apartment Monday, January 21, 2018.
He was born in Fargo, North Dakota to Lawrence and Mildred Wermager and grew up in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Marc was a graduate of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota and Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. Ordained a Lutheran Minister in 1970 he served as a pastor of Lutheran Church of the Cross in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Later he devoted his life to win protection for the Atikaki Wilderness. (Atikaki is Saulteaux-Ojibwa for “Country of the Caribou”.) He served as Executive Director of the Atikaki Councils and led their successful efforts. He was called the father of Atikaki Wilderness Park in Manitoba and Woodland Caribou Wilderness Park in Ontario. He continued being an advocate for these parks as well as owning and operating the Atikaki Canoe Outfitters in Red Lake.
Marc is survived by a brother, Brian Wermager of Brainerd, Minnesota and a sister, Sheryl Engan of Willmar, Minnesota.
Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of choice through the Red Lake Chapel, Box 237, Red Lake, ON P0V 2M0.
