Obituary of Gordon Lamond
LAMOND, Gordon Warren –
Peacefully on Sunday, January 13, 2019 in his 86th year, surrounded by friends at the Brantford General Hospital. Beloved husband of the late (2014) Margaret Elizabeth Lamond (nee MacDonald). Gordon will be lovingly remembered by his sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Catharine Brown (the late Steve), Laurine Madge (Richard), Bruce MacDonald and by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Predeceased by his brother Jack Lamond (Dorothy); sisters Marion Koskela (Olaf), Gwendolyn Kuyper (Nick) and Barbara Lamond. A heartfelt thank you to Gary and Marie Braund and Marge Fraser for their compassionate care and visits over the last number of years. He will be fondly remembered by Chuck and Liz Slemin and many friends.
After completing high school at BCI, Gord became an employee of Murphy Tobacco in 1953 becoming a salesman for the company a few years later selling pipe tobacco. He met his future wife Marg at Murphy Tobacco when she started as a receptionist. He then moved on to selling pipe tobacco for Theodorus Niemeyer for several years. When the pipe tobacco business went into decline, Gord became a salesman for Union Gas beginning in 1975 in Hamilton and moving to the Brantford office in 1986 where he retired in 1995.
After, and before retirement, Gord and Marg loved to travel. They travelled to the Caribbean, to Panama, to several countries in Europe, and a few times to Hawaii.
Gord was strongly associated with Brantford football from his time playing for BCI and later with his long-term association with the Brantford Football Association. He was an Honorary member of the Bison’s Alumni. His football skills were good enough that he almost became a Hamilton Tiger Cat playing in a couple of exhibition games. He kept active playing defence in an “old-timers” recreational hockey league at the Syl Apps Arena on Sundays for many years. Gord was also active in the community being part of the rink flooding group at the Pleasant Ridge neighbourhood for many years.
Gord was an immense fan of Toronto sports teams, especially the Argos and the Maple Leafs but later becoming a big Blue Jays booster, attending about 10 games a year for close to two decades with his late brother Jack.
At Gordon’s request cremation has taken place. A private family inurnment will take place at Farringdon Burial Grounds at a later date. If wished, memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Alzheimer’s Society or the Canadian Cancer Society would be gratefully appreciated.
