Obituary for
Donald McCulloch
The McCulloch family is devastated to announce the unexpected death of our beloved Husband, Father and Papa, Donald Albert McCulloch, on Dec 22, with his family by his bedside, at the Health Sciences North Hospital in Sudbury, ON.
A lifelong resident of Thunder Bay, Donald was born on April, 29, 1933 in Port Arthur, to Robert and Kathleen McCulloch. He was one of 7 children.
He attended Pine Street School and Hillcrest High School. Upon leaving school he worked for the Department of Highways as a Surveyor. His work brought him to Fort Frances, where he met the love of his life, Sharron Lavedure. They were married Sept 3rd, 1960 in Rainy River. Settling in Port Arthur, he continued to work for the Department of highways. He returned to school in 1963 and became a draftsman. After his graduation, he joined the City of Port Arthur Planning Department, and later, the Assessment office. He then worked at CMHC as a housing inspector, until his early retirement in 1990. After retiring, he took his dream job of being a custodian. He was with the Lakehead School Board part time until his retirement in 1998. After fully retiring, he remodelled the family camp on Clover Beach. He loved yard work, woodworking, and even loved shovelling snow, only getting a snowblower (his trusty Cub Cadet) after his 80th birthday.
He was a proud Scotsman, spending many hours researching his clan and Tartan. He loved to listen to the music of the pipe bands at their Hillcrest Park outdoor concerts and could be found there most Thursday nights in the summer. In the fall of 2017, he and Sharron took a dream trip to Scotland, seeing the sights of Glasgow and the Highlands. He loved camping, taking many trips with his family in their trailer. Don was a hockey and baseball fan. He loved to watch the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Blue Jays. On game days, he and Sharron would put on their Blue Jays shirts, shut everything down, and watch the game. He always had an opinion on what the team should be doing to win. They were very happy to see a few live games in Minneapolis. He loved to be active and was often found puttering in his yard or working on projects in his workshop. He was a true handyman and was relied upon by everyone for repairs and upgrades. Not a day went by without his kids asking his advice on home repairs and projects. He loved nothing more than his family, never missing a hockey game, graduation, recital, birthday, or any opportunity to spend time with his kids and grandkids. He was thrilled to be a Papa to two Great Grandchildren in the last year. He was our hero, the rock of our family, and will be truly missed by so many.
He is survived by Sharron, his loving wife of 58 years. His Children Sondra Menard (Murray Butler), Son David McCulloch (Tammy Ezowske), both of Thunder Bay, Daughter Tammy Alexander (Jerry), of Port Lavaqua, TX. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Brennan Menard (Alex), Ehren Menard, Raegan Menard (Jordan), Camryn McCulloch, and Ryan McCulloch, Step-Grandchildren Aaron Butler (Kellie), Amber Butler (Ryan), Bradie Butler, and Olivia Ezowske, as well as great grandchildren Tilly and Oskar, and step Great Grandchild Logan. He is also survived by brother Frankie (Kathie), of Maple Grove, MN and sisters-in-law Janet and Gladys McCulloch. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
He was predeceased by his son Kenny, parents Robert and Kathleen, bothers Tommy, Murray, and Melvin. Sisters Moira and Robbie, as well as Nephew and best friend Lloyd Gilliam.
