Vernon Ernst 2018

Obituary Overview
Vernon Ernst
On September 26, Vernon Ernst passed away peacefully in his room at Spruce Manor in Dalmeny. He was a husband twice, father thrice, and grand- and even great-grandfather before his passing. His first wife, Joan, bore him three children: Jerrilyn, Alan and Trent. His second wife Elaine shared his affection with a dog, Sparky. Both Elaine and Joan predeceased him. Left behind to miss Grandpa Vern are his grandchildren: Jade, Jael, Dillon, Dakota, Dante, Zoe and Bree, and his great-grandchildren: Addison, Tegan, Myka, Danica, Sadie, Alexa, Ryker, Dominic, Fynian, William, Robbie, Amy, Ellie and Beau. Vernon was son to Herbie and Mabel, both deceased and stepson to Lillian, who passed away last year. He was brother to Herbie, Doug and Reg, Bev, Avis and Darryl who are left behind to mourn his death as well as Vivian, Lloyd, Shirley and Connie, who all passed away before him. Dad was the strongest man I knew and often seemed larger than life. He was bull-chested, with arms his kids and grandkids could dangle from as he flexed. He presented quite the picture when dressed in his police uniform, off to keep the world safe and free from crime. He would return home to tell stories of crawling under flames shooting from a truck on fire to pull the driver free, or of his days in the navy, riding out typhoons and crippling sea sickness by hiding in a life raft. Not all liked Dad but most respected him. He was tough but fair and when he loved, he loved with every fibre of his being. He was fiercely protective and loyal. Following a head injury, Dad moved to his new home at Spruce Manor in Dalmeny. The amazing staff at Spruce Manor made dad part of their family and treated him with love and dignity. While there, Dad made a new friend named Carl, who took the time to share his faith and this had a lasting impact on Dad who came to know his Saviour on a personal level in 2014. Most people will remember him for wearing a uniform and always having a toothpick in his mouth but we, his children, will always remember him for being our Dad. He will be missed. Burial will take place on Friday, October 12, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, followed by a reception at Hillcrest Funeral Home (east on 8th St., first right past Briargate Rd.). Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.hillcrestmemorial.ca Arrangements entrusted to Hillcrest Funeral Home.
