Obituary for
Thérèse Poirier (Haché)
POIRIER, Thérèse (née Haché)
With appreciation for a life well lived, the family of Therese Poirier announces her passing. She entered this world November 25, 1919 and departed May 20, 2018. She left this life peacefully surrounded by the love of her children at Villa St Gabriel, her home for the past 5 years. Thérèse was born to Michel and Marie Haché at Portage River, New Brunswick. A proud Acadian, she was one of 14 children. She was predeceased by her sisters Alphonsina, Almilda, Beatrice, Bella, Estelle, Marie Dorilla, and Rita; and her brother Emile. Left to mourn are her sisters Bernadette, Diana, and Lea and brothers Elzéar and Rhéal. All reside in New Brunswick. In 1951 Therese was joined in marriage with Patrick Poirier (pre-deceased), an Acadian-born Sudbury miner. Moving to Sudbury, far from family, Therese and Patrick melded their Acadian heritage with life as Franco-Ontarians. Making their home in Azilda, the family expanded to include six children, Patrice (Renee), Gerard (Laurie), Rose Marie (Gilbert Dureau), Carmen (deceased), Evelyne (Ray Constantin) and Rita. Therese leaves us with a legacy; nine grandchildren, Donna, Melanie, Aline, Guy, Mathieu, Maxime, Eric, Tiffany, and Eve and eight great-grandchildren Chloe, Danica, Pascale, Colin, Simon, Esther, Peyton and Solomon. Educated as a teacher, Therese developed a love of numbers at an early age. Her teaching career was short lived when, at age 18, she was offered a job with the fledgling Caisse-Populaire and fishermen’s cooperative. Her contributions to the development of the credit union movement are recorded in the organization’s historical annals. Therese worked for that organization until age 31, rising to the position of area director. She took a 20-year hiatus for family, then resumed her career at the Caisse-Populaire Ste. Anne, Sudbury. She retired at age 65 from the Caisse. Following retirement, she continued to use her accounting skills in the role Treasurer/bookkeeper for the Rayside-Balfour Club D’Age D’or, of which she was a co-founder. In addition to raising a large family, Therese was a driving force in her community. A woman of strong faith, she was an active member of Paroisse Ste-Agnès. A family member recalls an employee of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care referring to her as “a treasure of the Francophone community”. For many years she worked to support access to french language education at all levels, was instrumental in bringing Meals on Wheels to Azilda and was proclaimed Senior of the Year in 1998. The family will receive relatives and friends at the COOPERATIVE FUNERAL HOME, 4691 RR 15, Chelmsford, Sunday, May 27, 2018 from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, May 28, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Ste-Agnès Church, Azilda. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Villa St. Gabriel or the charity of your choice. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff and administration at Villa St. Gabriel for their dedication and caring during Therese’s final years.
