Sydney Shoom 1933 2018

Shoom, Sydney – Passed away peacefully at Providence Care Hospital in Kingston on 5 October, 2018, in his 86th year. Pre-deceased by parents Irving and Doris (Birk), wife Ola (Robertson), and son Greg. Greatly missed by his sister Ina, sons and daughters-in-law Dan and Janet, Kevin and Chari, and Jelena, and grandchildren Mia, Chenai, Farai, and Nora. Syd was born and grew up in Toronto where he graduated from Jarvis Collegiate and the University of Toronto. After receiving a Master’s Degree in social work from the University of California (Berkeley), he pursued a career in corrections, starting as a parole officer in Barrie, followed by work with the Saskatchewan John Howard Society and as warden of the Regina Jail, and a number of years with the Ontario Ministry of Correctional Services. Following his retirement, Syd and Ola pursued their lifelong interest in collectibles by operating the Spikes Corners Antiques store in Harrowsmith. An avid fan of the Toronto Blue Jays, Syd played several sports over the years, including hockey, basketball, and golf, and extending to dog shows, where he had several award-winning bassett hounds. Syd was an active member of the Kingston Unitarian Fellowship and was extremely thankful for the support of the KUF community over the last few years. Heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff at the Kingston General Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit and at Providence Care Hospital. A visitation will be held at James Reid Funeral Home at 1900 John Counter Boulevard in Kingston on Friday, October 12 between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m., with a commemorative service and reception on Saturday, October
13 starting at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to the Kingston Humane Society and the Kingston Unitarian Fellowship.
