a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Martha
Place/Mary’s Court, Parkland, Antigonish on Wednesday, April
25th, 2018 in the
82nd year of her religious
life.
Born in Inverness, NS, Sister
Mary of Nazareth was one of five children of the late Allan R. and
Mary Anne (Gillis) MacDonald. Sister entered the Congregation of the
Sisters of St. Martha on September 8, 1934, pronounced her first vows
on August 15, 1936 and her perpetual profession of vows on August 15,
1939. After her profession of vows, Sister spent most of her life in
ministry as a social worker and as pastoral care worker in hospitals
operated by the congregation.
In Nova Scotia Sister Mary of
Nazareth served at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Glace Bay, St.
Charles Convent, Dominion, St. Mary’s Hospital, Inverness,
Villa Madonna, Bras d’Or, Little Flower Institute, Sydney,
New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, New Waterford, St.
Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish and St. Rita Convent, Sydney.
In Western Canada she served at Martha House in Regina, SK, and
Mineral Springs Hospital, Banff,
AB.
A graduate of St. Francis
Xavier University in Antigonish and St. Paul’s University,
Ottawa, Sister Mary of Nazareth was a member of the Canadian
Association of Social Workers. In 1976 she received Certification as
Chaplain in Public Institutions, awarded by the Canadian Council of
Churches, Toronto. The last number of years Sr. Mary of Nazareth
ministered to her Martha Sisters, and all who served in Extended Care
at Bethany and Enhanced Care in Mary’s Court at Parkland,
Antigonish, through her life of prayer. Her love of all things
Scottish never waned.
Sister Mary of Nazareth was
the last surviving member of her immediate family. Besides her
parents, she was predeceased by brothers Angus, Alexander, Roderick
Joseph and Rev. Hugh A.
MacDonald.
The remains will be resting at
Martha Place, Parkland Antigonish, beginning Monday, April 30, 2018 at
1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same
evening at 7:00 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on
Tuesday, May 1st, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. in St.
Martha Chapel at Martha Place, Parkland,
Antigonish.
