Sandy Andrew Lutic
It is with great sadness we share the passing of Sandy Lutic of Edmonton at the age of 82 years.
Sandy will forever remain in the hearts of his beloved wife of 57 years, Lydia; four children, Sharon (Murray) Rinas, Howard Lutic (Kari Magnuson), Glenn Lutic (Suzanne Laforce), and Karmen (Don) Masson. He was blessed with four grandchildren, Richard (Lisa Jong) and Jason Rinas, and Andrew and Mark Masson; as well as two great-grandchildren, Sophia and Clayton Rinas; all of whom brought much happiness in his life.
Sandy was born in Willingdon, AB, and raised on the family farm in Boian, the oldest Romanian settlement in Canada. His parents Andrei and Sanda, both immigrants from the region of Bukovina, Romania, had eleven children with Sandy and his twin Andy being the youngest. Sandy is survived by his loving sister, Alice Dorish; and was predeceased by his brothers, Floyd, Peter, Nick, Con, George, Paul and Andy; and his sisters, Katherine Lutic and Dora Zaharichuk.
Sandy attended grades one through eight in the two-room Boian School, grades nine through eleven at Willingdon School, and twelfth grade at Hairy Hill High School where his brother Con was both his teacher and principal.
After graduation, Sandy ventured away from the farm and worked in several industries before attaining a position with Canada Post where he worked for over 33 years until his retirement. He worked his way up from frontline to management positions in several departments and the culmination of his career was his appointment as Post Master in Lancaster Park, then Nisku, and finally in Morinville, Alberta.
The work ethic and the skills of his parents left a lasting impression that led Sandy to develop a passion for construction and a desire for achievement.
He began taking on building projects in the 1970s and established a small business that he worked at in addition to his employment with Canada Post. He took great pride in seeing projects to completion and expanding his real estate holdings.
While living in both Edmonton and St. Albert, Sandy was an active member of his community and church. He served on the executive of the Romanian Orthodox Church (Edmonton), Morinville Chamber of Commerce, and was a founding member of the Canadian Romanian Society of Alberta. He had also been a member of the Lions and Elks clubs, and enjoyed the camaraderie of curling, golf, and bowling.
Sandy’s battle with leukemia was brief with infiltration of the liver occurring over a few months. He was grateful for the loving support of his wife Lydia, and all of his family members who helped care for him in his final weeks.
