OBITUARY
Sandra Meridel Young
April 2, 1942 – December 14, 2018
It is with tremendous sadness we announce the passing of our wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Sandy Young at the age of 76.
Left to mourn her passing are her husband of 54 years, Gordon, her children Stewart (Cathy), Meridel (Rob), and Russell (Tara), as well as grandchildren Jade, Taylor, Raegan, and Jamie, and great-grandbaby Jackson, as well as her sister Suzzanne Vysick, brother-in-law James King, sister-in-law Bonnie Kerr, step-grandchildren Serena, Rebecca, Joel, Melinda and Josh, and her many nieces and nephews. Sandy was predeceased by her parents Hilda and Bill Flude, sister Judy, and baby grandson Daniel.
A beautiful person, inside and out, Mom had so many gifts it is difficult to list them all. She crocheted the most intricate designs which she concocted without using a pattern and finished in mere hours, including her daughter’s wedding dress, she lovingly knitted sweaters, scarves, toques and socks for family and friends and she designed her unique baby blankets treasured by so many. Sandy was an exceptional cook; her spaghetti was legendary. She was an artist first and foremost, and loved painting horses, dogs, cats, and fall and winter landscapes in oils and watercolours. In summertime, she and Gord created the most peaceful sanctuary in their backyard. She enjoyed showing every visitor the flowers and blooms which brought her such joy and brought the hummingbirds and butterflies to her garden. Growing up with a strong love of all animals, she would treasure the memory of her pet as a teenager, Donald the duck, for the rest of her life. At one point, she had a veritable menagerie, dog, cat, birds and dozens of fish, along with three active kids. She took the best care of all of us the only way she knew how, selflessly. A few years back, Mom “adopted” a squirrel, which found a safe haven in her yard. She named him (or her) Daniel and she published a children’s book about his antics. With a ready smile, the ability to find humour in almost any situation, an unmatched sense of compassion, and her heart as big as the outdoors, it was important to Sandy/mom that we all knew and understood how much she loved each and every one of us. As she makes her way to be with all those who went before her, and to be with her heart-dog, Blackjack, we have just one thing we want her to know as we each say goodbye to our family’s strength, “I love you. Bye-bye.”
In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions can be made to the Grace Hospital Foundation. In accordance with Sandy’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and a private family service will be held.
