Loving Mother and Matriarch
Ruth Kirby (Steinbach) was born April 25, 1940 and passed away in her Calgary home on August 16, 2018. Mom died in the company of our father Len Kirby. She left us after an extended struggle with medical issues that overwhelmed her in the last weeks of her life. We treasure those last few weeks as a time in which we strengthened family bonds as we cared for her.
Ruth was caring and generous to a fault, never relinquishing the responsibilities of matriarch that she held so dear. She was raised on the farm in Hesketh, Alberta. Her education began in Hesketh and was completed in Carbon, while residing “during the school week” at “Uncle Bill’s”; an experience she spoke fondly of. Mom received her Nurse’s Aide Degree in Calgary in 1959, having completed her practicum in Brooks and Drumheller. She often spoke of caring for elderly Drumheller coal miners.
Ruth will be remembered for her adventurous nature. Her name was spoken in hushed tones in ’50s Drumheller street-racing circles, thanks in part to Dad’s fast cars. Her sense of adventure lead her to travel the world with her best friend and sister Stella Heberling. Travels which she proudly funded via earnings from positions at Tops ‘N Toys, Sprague Drugs and the financial management of family businesses. We could always count on Mom’s support in our forays into activities, from motorcycles to skydiving, skiing to world travel and drag racing to classic cars.
Ruth has left behind her husband of 58 years Len Kirby of Calgary; three children: Darcy Kirby of Calgary, Diane Templeton of Cochrane and Brad Kirby of Calgary. Also left behind are the children’s spouses whom she adopted as her own: Lorraine Wise of Calgary, Rob Templeton of Cochrane and Melody Kirby of Calgary. Ruth will be dearly missed by her grandchildren: Cody, Jordan and Jamie Templeton of Calgary and Mitchell and Marcus Kirby also of Calgary. Ruth will also be lovingly remembered by her sisters Norma Thiessen of Grand Forks and Stella Heberling of Strathmore. She was predeceased by her brother Emil of Hesketh in 1946.
A Memorial Gathering will be held in the Prairie View Lounge of Mountain View Funeral Home (1605 100 Street SE, Calgary) on Saturday, August 25, 2018 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Ruth Mable Kirby 2018..
